Ok, everybody take a stab at this and hopefully someone else has experience my problem. I have a '96 5 spd. Drivetrain bone stock. Been showing a CEL for probably the last four months or so, but never had any problems, no big deal. Just recently I was driving between Detroit and Harrisburg, when I pulled off of I-80, and stopped at a stop sign. I jumped on it in first gear, and to my surprise, at about 4500 rpm, the fuel cut out. And I'm not talking about it felt like it was losing juice, I mean it felt like a had slammed into the 6500 rpm redline/fuel cut. It simply would not rev any higher than that, and the needle would just bounce off of 4500 rpm. In case it is of any consequence, the CEL would flicker when I would nail this fuel cut (as in it was on, but when the fuel cut out it would blink off for a split second). I continued on my way, making sure not to rev it too high, and found that as my trip continued, the rpm when the fuel cut out got progressively lower. At one point I could not go any faster than 50 mph in 5th gear, due to this fuel cut out. I finally make it home, and over the next two weeks the problem continues. Sometimes when I would just start the car up it wouldn't happen, but upon driving it for a few miles, it would start again. And like before, the more I drove it the lower the rpm level got, until i let it sit for several hours to cool off. So I took it in to my local mechanic and showed him what it was doing. He was befuddled. We set up an appt. and he said he wanted to pull the codes. I dropped it off the night prior, and for some reason couldn't get it to do the fuel cut thingy. The next morning I get a call saying they drove it and couldn't get it to do it either. They had pulled the codes and it didn't seem to be anything related. The codes are as follows. P1174 - Referred to as a "ghost code" (explanations welcome) P0335 - C/SHAFT POS SENS "A" CIRCUIT P0330 - KNOCK SENS CIRCUIT 2 As of today (I picked it up from the shop an hour ago) I couldn't get it to duplicate the fuel cut and I drove it hard. ANY IDEAS????? Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: Denver, CO Posts: 3,925 | Sounds like the Cam Position sensor. It starts out intermittent, then gets worse. Pull it out and clean it, then order a new one. There is a write up on how to change it on this site. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 02-21-2006, 06:03 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: CG68 Posts: 280 | Bump I'm gonna do the camshaft position sensor as soon as my tax refund gets here. | | | 02-21-2006, 06:30 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: PA Posts: 822 | I'm pretty sure the sensor is about $100.00. | | | 02-21-2006, 09:37 PM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: CG68 Posts: 280 | Ok I'm confused. The car has TWO camshafts, only one CRANKshaft. And when i search parts I find a CRANKshaft position sensor. Not only that my mechanic called it a CRANKshaft position sensor. Which is it??? | | | 02-21-2006, 10:50 PM | #8 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | car has both camshaft and crankshaft position sensors. i would go with the one the code is telling you is bad. __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 02-21-2006, 10:54 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: CG68 Posts: 280 | Of course that makes sense, but the code read as follows: C/SHAFT POS SENS "A" CIR They're both c/shafts if you think about it. | | | 02-21-2006, 11:07 PM | #10 | Member Join Date: Sep 2003 Posts: 67 | I second camshaft pos. sensor. When i was reading your original post that is what I thought even before I read the codes that were thrown or everyones replys. I would replace the sensor and see what happens I bet that will fix it. __________________ Custom Cold Air Intake, Custom IAT controller, SuperSprint Exhaust, High Flow CAT, Long Tube Header, H&R 'Race' Lowering springs, Short Shifter, JB Racing Lightweight Flywheel, M3 Clutch Kit w/Rogue Semi-Metalic Disk, Zex Nitrous System, Euro Clear Corners, Elipsoid Headlights w/Halos, Eyebrows, Window Tinting, Invisible Bra | | | 02-22-2006, 04:48 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Philly, PA Posts: 189 | I had the same problem with my 98 ti 5 sp I had the Crank Sens replaced total price part and labor came out to $375.00 way to high but problem fix | | | 09-28-2010, 09:19 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Auburn, WA Posts: 1,814 | okay im having the same problem now and i know this is an old thread but maybe some1 can help me with this, having the exact same problem car only revs to 3k and get lower and lower every time it hits the 3k rpm, the code that shows is p0335 - crankshaft position sensor a circuit, i took it out and clean it and it didnt seem bad or dirty at all, and i also replace the cam sensor couple years ago so idk what else to do right now this is making me crazy, i cant drive the car anywhere with 3k rpms or less, ohhh and all this happens after i wash the car/engine/underneath, i check all conections and stuff for water but they all were 100% dry, any1 have any sugestions __________________ 5/96 318TI Sport BIG TURBO | | | 09-28-2010, 10:56 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | I had the same problem and it was that the insulation disintegrates on the sensors and shorts out. My knock sensors, the crank sensor, and the cam sensor all were like this. Replace the crank sensor. http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=29937 __________________ No more ti.
