So now I do both. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 12-18-2005, 11:04 PM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | i have an auto, so i have the little P to stick the shifter into! i always have my parking brake on...it just is a habbit ive picked up ever since i started driving...i figure...parking brake...im parking...lets use it! and when i say it is always on, i mean only on when im parked...not while i drive! __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 12-18-2005, 11:34 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2004 Location: Northern New Jersey Posts: 395 | Quote: Originally Posted by robcarync i have an auto, so i have the little P to stick the shifter into! i always have my parking brake on...it just is a habbit ive picked up ever since i started driving...i figure...parking brake...im parking...lets use it! and when i say it is always on, i mean only on when im parked...not while i drive! | It's also called an Emergency Brake, you know... But I always put my car in gear, either first or reverse with the handbrake because I don't trust it, as I need replacement. | | | 12-18-2005, 11:41 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2003 Location: cary, nc Posts: 2,259 | blahh oh well im sure its a great habbit to have! __________________ 1995 318ti Active Pioneer Speakers [] Aluminum Billet door locks [] ACS Pedals/Deadrest [] ACS Shift Knob / E-Brake Handle [] Clear Corners/Tails/Sides [] Sylvania Exterior Lighting [] Custom CAI [] Dinan Engine Chip [] Dinan Transmission Chip [] H&R Race Springs [] Tokico Illumina Shocks [] BMW X-Brace [] Relocated Lighter Mod [] Custom iPod Mod http://www.cardomain.com/id/robcarync | | | 12-19-2005, 12:32 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2004 Location: New Jersey Posts: 363 | One of my dumber moments... I live on a main street, but there is a sidestreet we sometimes park on that is a hill going up. My dad used to move my car there for whatever reason, and since he drives manual, he'd park it with the Emergency Brake up. Now, I get into my car one day put it in drive and drive to school, all the way to school in fact. I call my dad to say something feels wierd about my car, he says he'll check later. When I parked my car at school, there it was Emergency Brake still up. Felt like an idiot... However, how can u possibly drive 10miles with an emergency brake on? I'm convinced mine was somehow broken. __________________ RIP Tonka Hitlerietta 08/03/04 - 01/25/05 | | | 12-19-2005, 12:44 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | On hills I always turn my wheel towards or away from the curb, depending on the direction. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 12-19-2005, 04:44 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Maryland, USA Posts: 678 | Ya know, when I was thinking of this... automatics completely slipped my mind. He's driving a nice newish Saab & parked by nudging the parked cars out of the way with his car until he had a space big enough to park in. I was totally gobsmacked, just couldn't believe what he was doing. He told me that all the Parisians did it, it was the only way they could get a parking space & for this reason everyone left their handbrake off & the car out of gear. | | | 03-05-2006, 12:05 AM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Fl...tampa area Posts: 320 | i would flip if somebody did that to my car here in america... but yes i back up a lot so that way i can get it and just pull out and i usually am the first one out at school and work....just makes it earier when leaving. and i used to never pull the ebrake in my 240sx but i read in the bmw manual it says to never park it in gear as a substitute for the Ebrake so now i use the ebrake and then put it in first gear too | | | 03-05-2006, 04:15 AM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Regensburg, Germany Posts: 584 | I'm with JPerfect, I know that in gear will suffice, but I remember when I was young, my mom's car had rolled into the people's across the streets yard; she thought she put it in gear. And when facing downhill, I put it in reverse. Otherwise, second and the brake. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
