A quick lunch break, and then off to a concert this evening, so likely won't touch it until tomorrow afternoon (unless I can sneak a quick / clean diagnostic in before we leave tonight) Summary: 1. 413 DME (red label) with Turner stock chip 2. M52 but with full OBD1 conversion 3. Car is a '95ti 4. Pin 7 on X20 has been pulled. 5. Engine ground strap is on, and the ground on the RF shock tower is present What car will do: 1. Crank over 2. Dash lights come on, but no check engine light (haven't swapped bulbs yet to see if that is the problem) 3. Only error with Peake tool is 1A, which is Control Unit Supply 4. Fuel pump is not running. I can bypass relay and get it to run. The control side of the relay grounds through the DME. I get voltage on the + side of the control side of the relay. 5. No tach movement at all during crank. 6. I get 12V on Pin 26 of the DME (Battery Voltage) Suggestions? Thanks! Any other thoughts? | | | 01-13-2014, 03:31 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2013 Location: Lakeland, FL Posts: 229 | I got a couple of more hours of troubleshooting in today. Still no start. Would certainly welcome any thoughts from those who have been here before. - The DME is a 413 red, which shouldn't have EWS issues. I also removed Pin 7 on X20 (Pin 66 going on DME). The 413 DME came with a stock Turner chip in it. I do not have the BMW 413 chip.
- The DME is pulling in the DME relay, as I'm getting voltage to the stuff downstream of the DME relay, such as coils, fuel pump relay etc.
- Check engine light goes on when key is turned and my Peake reader is communicating with the DME. I'm not currently getting any codes.
- Fuel pump comes on when fuel pump relay is bypassed.
- Battery voltage is measuring 10.5V during cranking. My ti has been off the road for a couple of months, so I'm going to put it on a charger tonight.
- There is no movement at the tach at all. I've swapped clusters back to my known good 318ti cluster to verify it wasn't a tach problem. The 318ti cluster should read the tach signal, but obviously be off by 1/3.
- Faint smell of fuel on new plugs.
- Engine is not catching at all.
- I checked for spark on #1 and #2, and have spark. It doesn't seem that strong, but I don't have much to compare it to.
- I'm running M52 coils on my M52, but have M50 spark plug boots. They are different part numbers, but I can't find a definitive answer on the difference.

Bentley says 1280 but I have read a few posts that said closer to 540 is actually correct and that is what a new one measures. I didn't gap the sensor but is all the way in. I am at a bit of a loss. Charged the battery to see if that was part of the other. No change other than it cranked faster :-) | | | 01-14-2014, 04:48 PM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2014 Location: Edmonton, Canada Posts: 6 | OK, seems that the sensor is fine, otherwise you'll have no spark. To summarize: you have both fuel (you can check for pulses at the injectors with either store bought or DIY LED tester: any colour LED in series with 1000 ohm resistor) and spark, so your problem might be proper valve or spark timing. I have the feed and return lines to the fuel rail backwards. I don't know if the FPR in the M50 fuel rail would act as a check valve in the wrong direction or not. Will fix that tonight and try again. | | | 10-13-2014, 04:08 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2014 Location: Hawaii Posts: 114 | Hey Wake74, do you have any conclusion? | | | 10-13-2014, 02:21 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2013 Location: Lakeland, FL Posts: 229 | I had the fuel rail plumbed backwards. The car started up immediately after I swapped the supply and return. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
