Default Headlight beam pattern?

Is it just me, or do the stock headlights put off a very poor beam pattern? When i bought the TI, the lights were aimed directly in front of the car, so it was hard to see down the road. I tried to adjust them, but now when adjusted so i can see in front of me, i notice the beam reflecting off of trees, street signs, etc(way too high).
Is there a better way to fix this, am i just not adjusting them right? Or do i really need to upgrade to projectors?

You need projectors. The USA/North American spec E36 headlights are well known to be lame. ddmtuning.com has Apexcone projectors (ZKW/Bosch replicas) and HIDs for a measly $100. While Apexcone and Depo headlights aren't as good as the genuine Bosch or ZKW lights, the general consensus is they are still eons better than the stock lights.

Yep. Most use an H1 bulb. The wiring is a bit different, but aftermarket headlights often come with plug-n-play harnesses.

Are you sure your headlights are properly aimed:
