Default auto trans wont shift into 4th

ive got a 95 with 103000 miles and when it gets to speed to shift into 4th the light with the exclamation mark inside a sprocket lights up on my dash and it stays in 3rd even from takeoff. if i turn the car off and restart it and stay in 3rd i can drive around. any ideas?? please help

Yeah, the manual says that light will come on with the problem you describe. It says to avoid severe loads and take it in to a BMW dealer without delay. Naturally.

How does it do in the manual position?

It is going into safe mode. if you are experiencing that when it is shifting in 4th gear it could be the 3rd to 4th solenoid is messed up...

When you shut off the car and restart you should get a check engine light. Have you had that code read? It will usually give you a little bit more of an idea about the problem.

But if you want to keep driving that car with that transmission you really need to get a good transmission person to look at it. You'll probably find that the money to fix it is not worth it.
