The filter is directly accessible, and the drain plug is obvious. You'll spend more time waiting for it to drain than you will doing anything else. | | | 04-30-2006, 12:14 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | Why an STP brand? BMW filters are cheap. I use 15W50 Mobil 1. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 04-30-2006, 12:33 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | Open the oil filter box and read the end of the filter. For instance WIX filters for the M42 have Mann stamped on the end of them.... No complaints. Any quality sythetic should keep it happy. When I switched over to synthetic the engine just felt healthier and reved more smoothly. Don't over tighten the drain plug when you re-install. I bought the filter cannister tool from Bavarian Autosport to easily access the filter insert. Everything else is relatively straight forward. If your 240sx oil filter is anything like my Sentra SE-R oil filter, you will be pretty disappointed with a BMW/Mann insert filter. It's like going from a shrink-wrapped work of art to a POS that got hastily shoved in a box that could have been sitting on a shelf collecting debris for years. There is no protection from dirt and dust in the packaging and I really wonder about the effectiveness of the filter design itself. | | | 04-30-2006, 05:29 AM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2005 Location: Portland Or Posts: 2,666 | The canister filters have identically the same guts as a BMW filter. The reason they don't use a can is so you can look at the element for excessive metal or other contamination. I work on Multi Million dollar equipment that uses the same style filter. And the pumps that use them run hundreds of thousands of hours without a oil change.
