I'm guessing you're talking about the TI being a bastard child. It was an economy BMW, and most people don't view it as a 'real' bmw.
The ti is not only a real BMW, it is a unique BMW, the only BMW hatchback. That one of the things that makes it cool, that and the fact that the ti is easy to maintain, relatively inexpensive to buy, and great fun to drive.

Not the only hatchback. Just the only one called a hatchback.

There is also the Z3/Z4 Coupe.

I have heard all the crap online from e-thugs about the hatch being the ugly step child of the e36 platform.

However, in person, someone always comes up to me and admits they really like the ti and want one...

There's an a$$hole my age that's tries to give me **** for my car. He's such tool. He drives a really old beat up cop car and thinks he's cool. He said he could kick my ass in a straight line or in the curves. I just laughed. I have yet to shut him up

97e36ti, the guy who ragged on your car is a jerk, plain and simple. We know the 318ti is a great car, otherwise we would not have bought one. Right?

And anybody who uses "gay" as an insult just proves he's a tool. I don't get how that's supposed to be a bad thing.

A Country Squire that handles better than a ti? I would think that just on wheelbase alone, the ti could out handle something like that. Surely you're not dealing with a stock suspension...?

The funny thing is, practically everyone I've noticed that rips on the ti drives a 3-series themselves. It's almost like they're trying to say: "This was as much BMW as I could afford, but I still feel the need to be superior to SOMEBODY." The sad thing is, too many people in the US buy a BMW because they feel it lends them some sort of status or prestige, and probably the root reason why so many like to disparage the ti- it is, after all, an economy car, but the real reason the rest of us drive one is because, like most other German cars, they are exceptionally well engineered and just flat out fun to drive!

Also? See Johnboy's post...

I think someone else said on the other thread - the specialist areas are useful, the 'general' areas are a bit crap. Mind you I know/use several forums where that is the case. I think you just have to assume that there are a lot of dickheads on the net and set your filter to screen them out. Otherwise you end up going mental.

ETA... ohhh wait a second I didn't realise BF.com and BF.co.uk are different sites... in which case disregard what I said!
ha ha ha. no man, bf.com in the US is very similar, which is why i rarely post on it. being that i was (and still am) new to bmw's, i had a lot of questions and never really got any answers. this forum on the other hand is very supportive. i have NEVER see someone get 'flamed' on here or told to 'use the search' when they had a legitimate, un-answered question.

and the 5 series GT... also rumoured 'GT' (hatchback!) shape F30 3er due in 2013

they don't seem to be setting the world alight with sales, though, they were released in 2009 and I've only seen a handful on the roads. Not too sure if I like them in general, although this Hamann version is quite nice.
