Default BMW front wheel drive

Looks like we are going to see some front wheel drive cars in BMW's line up in the not to distant future.

4 door porsches, fwd bmw's.. the end is coming!

Ferrari will save us!

I can imagine they might want to develop the transverse layout since a lot of awd cars use them.. Maybe their Mini was too successful? Drivehafts and rearends must add up I suppose..

The ultimate economy commuting machine!

I think one of their big problems is that, for example, the 1 series isn´t as successful as the VW Golf.

Here in Germany on of the key features for this class of cars is the trunk capacity. And there the rwd has a problem, because the rear axle differential needs a lot of space which can be used for more trunk capacity in fwd cars.

Another thing is that a fwd car is easier to drive

You know what? I'll just buy a GTI. BMW NA is apparently never going to sell another hatchback in the US anyway and if they switch the smaller models to FWD there's no reason in my mind to pay the likely price difference between whatever these models end up being called and the GTI. My wife's 2010 is very nice and it's plenty fast. We got all the features she wanted for about $10K less than it would have cost in a 3 series. I'll keep my old BMWs, but they keep making it harder and harder for me to ever consider buying a newer one.

It's a little sad that the Ultimate Driving Machine has to go the way of the Big 3 and so many others and Fisher-Price their cars.

I kinda thought the point of canning Bangle was to get Detroit out of München, not bring it closer...

I wish they would figure out that people buy BMW's in spite of the I-drive, not because of it... Arg. What piece of junk... Bad as windows...

It looks like you're trying to activate the passenger seat eject button.

All they need to do is establish a sub-brand for these cars and everyone will be happy, as far as I can see... otherwise I think dilution of image is really gonna hurt. Then again, they might turn out to be the most awesomest FWD cars ever... but I doubt it, somehow.
