My new toy is 5-speed automatic with manual sports shift. It's great to drive as is but is a little sluggish changing gears on manual mode. Am currently looking into ways of make the shift more responsive without having to replace the shifter and/or transmission.

I wasn't allowed to learn to drive auto. I tested with one, but I have owned and driven only manuals. I drive for the love of driving, and the control you get with a manual is incomparable. The only benefit to autos is stop and go traffic jams. For normal city driving, manuals do just fine.

I'm with the others when I say, if there is no clutch I wind up tromping on nothing. Old habits die hard.

For you auto-heads out there, manual isn't very difficult and after a bit of regular driving, it becomes second nature. It isn't annoying or an inconvenience, it's a NO BRAINER!

Manual on the ti, Auto/Step on the e46 320i
I do enjoy driving stick but in heavy traffic jams round where I live where there are lots of steep hills, or on long journeys I definitely appreciate the cruise control/auto combo on the E46. Then again the E46 does pwn the ti for cruising in comfort (not least cos the aircon works better hehe)

If you have an auto! it would be 4.44 go for something lower like 4.** or high 3.** dont go too low or may be slow off the line on takeoffs. Im still looking for a lower ratio for my automatic to give me more gas milage as i do alot of long traveling.

Cool

*bump*

My baby is an auto and yes I love her at the point in which I literally kiss her good night. Honestly I'd prefer manual but after stalling 500 times in my standard Honda Prelude I gave up on manual and decided to go for an auto. My problem with manuals isn't the shifting but the launching is what gets to my nerves. My baby is still fast even for an auto and I plan on doing a tranny swap later on in the future, but for now I'm just loving not having to stall whenever the lights changes from red to green.

Manuals are indeed a lot more fun but autos are just more practical. To all auto haters, stop bashing on autos, not everyone adapts/gets used to stick in 2 days. I want to have both an auto and a manual in my late 30's. Autos as a daily driver and Manuals for the weekend

I have manual trany, and I love it! I need a lsd swap though, every time I launch the car, only the right wheel is spinning funny. Autos are good if you drive in traffic a lot, but personally, every time I drive an auto I feel bad to push it too much, not fun at all

This is my first automatic car. Been driving a manual since I got my permit at 15 (12 years ago), and I'm missing the hell out of it already. The auto is nice in traffic, which is daily for me to and from work... but all other times I wish I had the stick back. Oh well, still enjoying my 318ti regardless.

I like my automatic transmission. I would not be surprised if it's as quick as a manual ti...you certainly can't miss a shift. If I want to row the gears I take our 98 Z3 out, but in town that gets old fast. Then again, I'm 64 years old.

There's no way the automatic is as quick. Sorry haha. I hate to disrespect anyone but the auto trans blows in these cars. The only way I could stand the m44 was with the manual.
