Default Quick coolant question

Okay sorry to bother you all with another coolant based question but I searched and couldn't find my answer. Replaced radiator, fittings and fan switch all in passed half year. Yesterday twice my temp needle bumped up about four needle widths but not the te third line then came back down to normal. Did the same thing again on trip home. I bled my system this morning but I had a steady coolant stream. Any ideas? I believe all I haven't done on coolant system is thermatat and pump.. But it doesn't seem like the thermo, could pump be dying and coming back Car at 109xxx Thank you

Default hmmmm...

honestly, without knowing what the temps were and what they're going up to then down to, anything I say is a guess. with that in mind, the cooling fan comes on at higher temps and will run until it drops to a more normal temp. its not too abnormal to see cooling fans come on regularly this time of year. I live out in the SoCal desert so I run BMW blue coolant and Water Wetter with about 55 to 60% water. mine doesn't get to the point of turning on the fan (unless I'm using A/C).

What ever it is, watch your temp closely and shut the engine down if the temp gauge gets past 12 oclock and stays there. Actually any reading past 12 oclock is overheating. My guess is the water pump going out.

Wink

Sounds totally plausible jca, keep in mind coolant temp sensors only read coolant, the moment that steam is what's on the other side of the temp sensor, it'll read way colder.

Good point. I forgot to mention to rmil03 that water pumps, thermostats, and radiators are considered consumables in these cars and should be replaced before they fail. Every 60k or so for pumps and thermostats and every 100k for radiators. Cheers, John
