Does anyone know what we need to do. main problem is the idiling. Idles real rough the for no reason it would rev up to 7000 rpm for what ever reason. | | | 11-05-2007, 12:37 AM | #2 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | You're going to need a '95 DME(ecu) and wiring harness. Besides that you've turned an OBD2 car into an OBD1, which depending on the state that it's registered in may be illegal. If FL doesn't have emissions testing you should be in the clear, but why would you want to do this? __________________ 4 MORE YEARS BABY!!! | | | 11-05-2007, 01:25 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2005 Location: Florida Posts: 2,525 | That is not a swap where you can just change the motor and nothing else... As Jesse said you need the ECU and all of the appropriate sensors for the M42. If you were going to try and keep using the M44 ECU you would need to make sure that all of the sensors are the appropriate ones for the M44. The only problem with that is that the sensors between the M44 and M42 are different. According to another member that inadvertently ended up with this same swap the M44 CPS does not fit the M42. Not to mention that that M44 ECU is mapped for the M44, not the M42. | | | 11-05-2007, 01:55 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | CPS for Cam Position Sensor, not Crank Position Sensor. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 11-06-2007, 12:54 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: florida Posts: 4 | Thanks for all the info, once i got into this project i knew there would be problems. Let met start by telling you guys what i have done so far. 95 block and head with a 97 intake. Everything match perfectly except for the cam position sensor and the ping sensors, but the 95 block has two ping sensors. With that said, I am wondering if i take the front housing off of the 97 motor to repositon the cam positon sensor to where it is on the 97 motor if it would work. I really don't want to swap the ecu out unless i have to. My son saw the swap about the 318 to 328 and that what we were going to do. Unfortunealy my mother in law total her car and now there is a rush to get this done asap to give hr some wheels. | | | 11-06-2007, 03:30 AM | #6 | Junior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: florida Posts: 4 | BTW, the crank sensor is external on the 95 and on the block on the 97, i messed with it some more tonight with no good results, Mohaughn where are you at in Florida, were in Melbourne | | | 03-09-2013, 07:25 AM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2012 Location: Boston Posts: 14 | hey redlined Long time since this thread but im wondering if the idea for the cam shaft sensor worked, i have the same issue, had bad engine on my 98 318ti quickest thing i found was a 95 ti, but im using the obd 2 harness, stuck at the cam shaft issue, If your still around let me know how it went. | | | 03-10-2013, 01:36 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Dec 2012 Location: new jersey Posts: 41 | not knowing how the op did his repair, i would suggest one of the three following options. option 1: locate a pigtail with the correct plug connection and cut/splice it in. will require a solid connection and shrinkwrap to keep potential moisture and corrosion out. option 2: disassemble said connector and use the correct connector housing to fit the sensor. only requires that you know how to disassemble said connections and put them back together again. you need to pay attention to which wires go where. specialty wiring tools may make this a little easier, providing the wiring harness is long enough to fit. option 3: swap out the timing cover to accomodate the wiring. only will work on obd2-to-obd1 swaps, so this is not going to be an option for. requires gaskets and labor, though... other than that, i see no other way around this. df | | | 08-02-2016, 03:02 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2013 Location: Seattle Posts: 513 | Anyone done this successfully? I'm trying to wrap my head around something similar. I have a running M42 with a M44 head on it. It's in a '95 currently. I would like to put it in a '96. Without changing the ECU so the thing will pass emissions. Not sure what head sensors the shop changed to get the '95 going, but I assume since it's an M44 head that I can change them back or get them right. While reviewing RealOem block sensor pictures, the ping sensor is there on the '96 and not on the '95. This could be the problem. I haven't had a look at them both in real life yet, just throwing this out there to see if anybody see's red flags right away. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
