i got these cool little push pin/corkscrew type things at wal mart today. they are for a temporary fix of sagging head liners.
Talked to an upholstery guy, he said using those corkscrew pins could damage the headliner baseboard. If one had to do a temp fix he suggested that using a stapler would be a lot less damaging.

Default wow what a long thread

That was lots of reading, tho i learned a lot about re covering a headliner It was dragged out. It was a certain few that really made the whole read worth while! It was nice to hear lots of input and i take it this is a very comman problem that bmw overlooked when making the car!

I thought I may have been one of the lucky ones that had certains in my car but no not at all its not a M option, its just shotty bmw design or poor previous owner care! None the less im going to have to take the time and get it fixed up nice an proper and why not make it with the meterial that I want an not some crusty ugly dirty light grey meterial thats proned to getting dirty on every touch...

Im going with black suade meteral if i can find it at the local fabric land ( a fabric retailer in ontario canada.)

I just hope the 4 seasons in canada do not screw me over and force me to to it again next year - Ive been researching the different glues and it seems the one of choice is 3m 80 sprey adhesive. Alright then..

good info In the thread I just didnt see anyone mention how much fabric to buy to get the job done... It is also kinda confusing how to remove the sunroof cover (part with the meterial on it) The thread kinda scares ya away from wanting to take the sunroof apart its not too reassuring

tho im not going to do 80% of the job and leave a dirty sunroof cover thats just stupid. So off to the fabric store I go.. Ill just get my trusty tape measure out and make some measurements or take another 3 hours and read this thread.. Thanks everyone for the good nights read.
cheers. ill post pics when I get mine back together.

I've tried spraying some adhesive through a small hole in the liner to fix small sags. I've never been able to get it to work...it can turn out looking worse than a sagging liner. My experience, anyway.

a cheep fix to a problem is never the way to go.. im all for doing it myself but I honestly think trying to fix it without taking it right down and out of the car isnt even smart at all...

everytime i try to fix things half assed thats what I end up with is half assed fixes

do it right or dont even do it at all.

Amen! After reading all about it here I decided I could do it myself, but I hate glueing fabric on contours. So I checked out 3 upholstery shops in the Seattle area, they all quoted me the same price, namely $450(that includes the front A-pillars).

Bottom line...I love this little hatchback & I went for it!

I am the only one that sees the inside of my car, so the buttons worked fine.
With the sunroof cassette holding it up in the center, I only needed a few in the sagging spots to tack it up.
Looks like they came with the car.
I have learned in my 62 years, if you spend too much money on a car, either it will get stolen or run over by a Semi.
GTG for another 10 years now... I worry more about how a car runs and handles than cosmetics.
LOL

My ti is sagging a bit in the back seat area, but a least the sags are symetrical! I think that I will leave it alone for awhile. Can't stand the thought of staples or corkscrew pins sticking out of the headliner.

Mine, the same way on my Greenie. just a few spots sagging, so the screw pins I used are clear, you can hardly see them. Micky mouse, for sure to stick pins in the headliner, but I'm a lazy SOB.

I treat my engine, transmission, wheels, tires, brakes, suspension, and anything to do with function with great pride and therefore, I do not consider myself neglecting my car because a sagging headliner is no longer sagging.
Ever owned a GM car? Camero? My Z-28 had a sagging headliner which I just tore out. Lighter means faster. Didn't look to bad when I was passing anyone (that coudn't see the headliner anyway) with my L-88 427 turning 8K and singing away...."I'm happy cause my owner just put a Crane Fireball 326 cam, Magnesium roller rockers, stainless steel pushrods, 11.5 to 1 TRW pistons with open port chamber heads from NASCAR". And 2 1/2 " per cylinder headers. I have a friend nearby that has already put the 325 motor in his ti, I think that is the way to go with the Ti's. This 1.9 L Volkswagon motor that comes with the ti's just don't get it.
I can see where a chick might worry about the headliner. Not me.
By the way, all those small neglected things was the first thing I fixed after buying my ti last year. EVERYthing works on mine. I bought it from a lady school teacher so it wouldn't be beat to death like the white one I used to have.
Never buy a car from a kid.

I apoligize. I can really rant when someone suggests I don't take care of my car.
All is forgiven and or forgotten.
As far as the headliner goes, I'll fix mine when it falls down.
I think it is great that we have the information at hand on 318.org to do the work needed yourself. Lots of tricks exposed on this thread, and I appreciate every bit of it. No offense anyone. Not my plan.
