Default For 1.8 engines

Well I tried my first mod and it made a noticeable difference in throttle responce and fuel econ. For those who have the bulky and rediculous airflow meter that is made by BOSCH then this apllies to you. If interested reply so I can e-mail you my little video I made performing this upgrade.
by-the-way. It is absoultly free and able to return back to its OEM place.

Even though we're 318, which is usually 1.8.... I believe we have 1.9L DOHC = \
Unless its for an e30 318 I suppose.

Okay I'll just go ahead and tell you guys instead of me taking like three hours to e-mail it to you with my crappy dial-up connection. First remove your air flow meter from the hose and filter box. Next with the use of a razor (be very carful mind you) remove the lid on the black box (where the wires connect to) by cutting the silicone adhesive from around it. VERY CAREFULLY remove the top lid of the box. Next, once you've removed the lid you'll see the guts of your flow meter. Look for a clip in the corner holding the black base dial (it will say 512 around the dail) thing down. Carefully remove the screw holding it in place while keeping tension on the dial with a free hand. Next, slowly rotate the dial back to reduce tension so the little aluminum flap inside the the housing can move easier. It took me tinkering around with it for a few hours to get it where I wanted it but eventually I tuned it to where it got the results I was looking for from a free mod. Anyway, once you've reduced tension put everything back together in reverse order..etc( I don't need to explain it you all are not morons) NOTE: once you have it to where you want it only then should you silicone the lid back on. But if any of you have questions and I am sure you will e-mail at bandl4ev@netzero.com and I'll call you so I can go over it with you. For those of you worried that you'll screw something up don't worry my check engine light never came on and if, only if, one of you break it completly I have an extra airflow meter I can send you all you would have to do is just pay the shipping. Well hope I did an okay job explaining it. Good luck

what does this actually accomplish in terms of engine management and how did you find out about this. i would like to do this to mine but am worried about the adverse effects that would come from changing the fuel mixture and delivery

flip; the 318ti originally came with a 1.8L engine. when they changed to the m44, it's displacement was bumped up, but they kept the designation.

dd; the explanation seems pretty straight forward. sorry to doubt you.

prenold; it seems like the mod just allows the AFM to open up easier. over time, you might have to go back in and adjust the tension in a few years since the original spring tension is for life, not performance.

i'd also caution people that this may not work for everybody. high altitude-folk mainly.
