Little bit about car and work what's done... I have 77.000 miles on my car ('97), and i have this car 2yrs. What work i did. I did replace (not personaly, car shop did all this): both oxygen sensors (bosch) both belts on engine (outside of engine not timing belt, my car have chain) disk rotors and brakes (front and rear) change spark plugs (ngk) and spark plugs wires (bosch) fuel filter (bosch) air filter change engine oil, and check trans fluid.. Ball Joint's - both side and did have some suspension work... Then just 1.600 miles affter all that work... So what else do you guys suggest me to do? This light is there just because car is programed to do this after certain milege (ex. every coupe thousand of miles) or showing that something is maybe wrong - like computer? Car running fine and i didn't see or feel anything wrong except minor power steeling leak, and i will fix that too. Hope you won't send me to other thread because i have read some of them, but i still wanted to ask about. One more question, is castrol oil good for bmw, hope it is? Thanks for any reply, and suggestion... | | | 01-03-2007, 08:55 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Minneapolis Posts: 1,587 | You're fine. That light is not like the "Check Engine" light that tells you something is wrong. It's part of the BMW Service Indication system. Essentially when your car get's enough miles (the green dashes will disappear one-by-one) the first thing that will pop up is the "Oil Service" light. At that point BMW suggests you get your oil changed, and BMW will reset the service indicator to all green dashes. Again, over time those green marks will go away and the next thing that will come will be the "Inspection". The process keeps repeating itself..... "Oil Service", "Inspection", "Oil Service", "Inspection", and so on. http://www.bmwworld.com/repairs/maintenance.htm Theorectically when you take your car to the dealer they will do these inspections/replacements. http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/tech...check_list.htm If you look through the lists, it's just basic car maintenance. The good news is you can reset the oil service & inspection light yourself with just a paperclip, or piece of wire. You'll need to locate your Data Link Connector (see link below). With the key on (position 2), touch one end of the wire to pin #7 and the other end to pin #19 (or a ground). Hold it there for about 3 seconds to reset the oil light. To reset the service light, hold it there for 11 seconds. Here are some pictures. http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/ele...ce_lights.html I used to reset them but I just don't care anymore. The service indicator goes out after a couple seconds anyways. I also have my own "plan" for when I change oil, fluids, filter, plugs, etc. What weight Castrol oil are you using? | | | 01-03-2007, 08:59 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Nov 2005 Location: Schiller Park, Illinois (w.sub.of Chicago) Posts: 67 | Thanks for reply. I found this http://www.bmwe36tips.20m.com/resetlights.htm It's little bit different from your link but i thing it's gona work - it's says e36 on it. I think BMW recommends synthetic 10w40 maybe. | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
