That was just from an oil change. I didn't even change the filter, because I couldn't get the thing off. Oh well maybe next time. It's also time for a new distributor cap and wires and plugs....soon to come | | | 03-18-2005, 12:02 AM | #17 | Member Join Date: Jul 2003 Location: San Antonio, Texas Posts: 62 | I've just recenlty taken a trip to Louisiana (Approx 8hrs for SA,TX), and unless my gauge or sensors are malfunctioning, my higway miles at one point had read 43.9mpg! Long straightway driving 80-90mph. City is about 29. __________________ '96 Active, Boston Green Future mods:Front lipspoiler, cold air intake by Otto Racing, Hartge Rear Wing spoiler, Smoke Grey Birdseye maple wood trim kit. | | | 03-18-2005, 02:45 AM | #18 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2005 Location: Fort Collins, CO Posts: 1,305 | I got 34.6 mpg over the course of about an hour and 15 minutes on the way to drill a couple of weeks ago. In fact, I've never gotten more than about 405miles on a full tank before. I'm not sure if it was the gas, but I did fill up with shell premium. | | | 04-12-2008, 08:35 AM | #20 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2003 Location: Walnut Creek, CA Posts: 642 | The EPA MPG for the M42: 5-speed: 19 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy auto: 18 mpg city / 26 mpg hwy and for the M44: 5-speed: 20 mpg city / 30 mpg hwy auto: 20 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy I get a pretty consistent 24-25 mpg with my '95 M42 mixed suburb/hwy driving. How any of you get more than 30 mpg is beyond me. 32 mpg on a fluke may be believable, but there's no way 36 mpg is possible unless you are drafting a semi. __________________ '95 330ti CS w/sr delete, S50USB30, cams, 24# inj, Conforti SW, Euro HFM, Samco Silicone Intake Boot, BBTB, Euro Oil Cooler, JTD CAI Duct, RE DMS exhaust, RE Tranny mounts, CF Valve Cover, LTW flywheel/Kevlar sprung hub clutch, RE SSK, 3.46 Finned LSD (M6) , M3 tranny, Brembos, RE Wheel Studs, SS brake/clutch lines, CF interior, Rear Headrest retrofit, Tilt Steering retrofit, 13.5 lb DynaBatt in rear, LED interior/footwell lights, ZKW HID, Headlight Aim Control, Rear fog light w/cluster indicator, CF 3 Aux gauge pod, BMW Traffic Pro/Alpine MP3-CD Changer, Staggered LTW wheels, '95 M3 steering rack, VIS CF Hood, M3 LTW Strut Bar, TCK SA coilovers, Red LTW Motorsport Seatbelts, OEM Fire Extinguisher, Z8 Starter button, Auto dim rear view mirror w/ Homelink/Compass, PDC, Rear Sun Shade, Euro Gauge Cluster w/oil temp/shift light , Headlight Washers, "Motorsport" Door Handles, CF Grills, French ZKW Fogs, Euro dash bins, Power Lumbar Support is next, Coming e39 M5 interior light, Bimmer Magazine 8/2007 | | | 04-12-2008, 06:24 PM | #21 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | when i was getting 36-38 i had my 2.73 lsd and was driving on a long flat straight highway. i dont think i would get near that now with my club sport and stock lsd __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 04-12-2008, 08:17 PM | #22 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2007 Location: Erie Pa Posts: 161 | when i lived in the city i was getting 18-20mpg but, just recently moved out of town. work is about 25miles away all back roads. so im now getting 23-25 mpg. so about 300per tank. i cant believe some of you guys are getting in the mid to upper 30's! | | | 04-13-2008, 11:24 AM | #23 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Essex UK Posts: 164 | I cannot actually be bothered to work out the conversion from US > UK gallons but here on normal A & B roads (in town) I get around 33>35mpg and my wife usually gets around 37>39mpg.....then again she drives slow! Mine is bog standard euro 1.8ti..(M44)...its just a very efficient little engine. Not bad at all. Justin | | | 04-17-2008, 04:08 PM | #25 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Halethorpe, MD Posts: 1,028 | I've been tracking my mileage now for several years and over the last 136 tanks of gas I've averaged 29.21 mpg. That's a good mixture of daily driving in mixed traffic conditions as well as 6 to 8 autocrosses per summer. I can't complain. If it wasn't for the ethanol those numbers would be better. On a related note, I've been running Mobil 1 5w30 for years and on my last oil change I switched to Royal Purple 5w30 for a test run. So far the car runs noticeably quieter and the last two tanks got just over 32 mpg. I'll let you know if this trend continues. | | | 04-17-2008, 04:25 PM | #26 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2005 Location: Essex UK Posts: 164 | Quote: Originally Posted by Borg561 Assuming the numbers you posted were MPG (UK), converting them to MPG (US) would give you 27.5-29mpg, and the wife 30.8-32.5mpg. I have driven carefully and steady up to the speed limits on a couple of trips to friends about 90 miles away and got over 40mpg....but it was soooo boring Hells bells...whats the red area on the rev counter for if not for dipping the needle in? It has been very consistant on my trips NH to VT and back. The OBC is more accurate than the speedo (speedo reads 2.5 mph fast) and the MPG figure matchs up when I fill it up. When I left home this morning the MPG was showing 30.0 mpg by time I got here it was up to 32.0 and it took just under 3 hrs non-stop. | | | 04-18-2008, 10:01 PM | #28 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: North Carolina Posts: 157 | Quote: Originally Posted by clex2 The EPA MPG for the M42: 5-speed: 19 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy auto: 18 mpg city / 26 mpg hwy and for the M44: 5-speed: 20 mpg city / 30 mpg hwy auto: 20 mpg city / 29 mpg hwy I get a pretty consistent 24-25 mpg with my '95 M42 mixed suburb/hwy driving. I'd love to know how some of you get it to 30+ on a consistent basis.. I've seen it go over 30 when I'm doing highway stuff from the start, but even as soon as I start hitting any hills it drops down | | | 04-18-2008, 10:07 PM | #29 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2007 Location: Los Alamos, NM Posts: 344 | averaging 75 mph on a full tank, I made 36 mpg on the highway when I went to pick the car up from the seller | | | 03-27-2014, 03:30 PM | #30 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2014 Location: ME Posts: 18 | Anyone interested in jump-starting this thread? I am interested in comparing the M42 and M44 highway MPG's. Please state engine/transmission so we can compare. Terrain description is helpful as well. I think 35 MPG highway is the norm for the M44/5-speed from what I hear.
