I did replace the original tensioner without compressing, and it worked fine. A little bit of chain noise for about 10 seconds until the oil filled the Hydraulic...

I had the same problem, trying to remove the thermostat housing bolts (this might be a design fault ?), but fortunately the bolts sheared flush with the thermostat housing instead of the cylinder...
