Default My 328 into a 1995ti swap thread

Just a kickoff post. Going to get a 1996 328 5 speed wreck this morning over by Orlando for $600. Jim's swap manual should arrive today in the mail. Probably won't do much for a couple weeks other than plan. Hope to be done by end of November but will probably slip into December to maintain marital bliss in regards to time spent in the garage.

Will post some photos of the donor later today.

First decision will be update my car to OBDII or spend the money and backdate the engine to OBDI. More research needed on that one.

Got the car home safely. What a project to get on the dolly and even more of a challenge to spin it 90 degrees and into the garage. The right front wheel is probably 4" back from its stock location which makes rolling or steering a problem. I will do some tweaking of the inner fender so it will leave the garage a bit easier when I am done.

My last engine swap was a carbed V8 into my MGB. This one has a "few" more wires. Hopefully Jim's manual will be here Monday so I can start to plan.

So I made the first pass through Jim's swap manual last night, and while it contains a ton of useful info, it definitely generated a bunch more thought and questions. The wiring still seems a bit intimidating as I've only done serious mechanical work on non-computer cars.

I think the obvious direction for me to go is to back-date the engine to OBDI, as described in the manual and in lots of other places. Since I don't have any O2 sensors on the donor car, I would need to procure 4 verses just one for 1 for OBDI, which helps off-set some of the cost of buying the other OBDI components (harness, DME, intake, cam sensors, crank sensors, etc. etc). While I have all the OBDII EWS stuff in the donor, getting a DME without EWS would certainly rule out some potential issues at start-up.

Definitely going to just keep driving the 4 banger until I get more of the required parts collected. Maybe this will turn into a Thanksgiving swap marathon.

First question after reviewing Jim's book some more:

1. Is there a preferred OBDI wiring harness? Does it make a difference or are all the E36 OBDI manual wire harnesses the same?

Default SCORE!!!!

A little trip to Orlando scored me the following OBDI parts for $340 (I had to pull them in the guys garage):

- OBDI Manual Harness
- 413 Red DME
- Turner Motorsports Chip in the DME (T413-000). The stock parts chip.
- HFM
- M50 Intake
- OBDI Throttle Body
- Radiator (replaced a few years ago according to date code)
- All the OBDI sensors (crank, cam, knock, etc)
- An OBDI mid-section with O2 sensor. The cats have been deleted, but the resonators are still there. Not sure what I think about the cat delete. It's OBDI one, so only one pre-cat sensor is required. He said it was pretty quiet with the stock muffler

Oh, and a set of M3 mirrors for another $60 :-)

Progress has been extremely slow. Too many home projects, and a business trip to North Africa haven't exactly helped. I did manage to at least get the M52 engine pulled on Saturday.

Still need to buy a bunch of misc. gaskets to freshen up the engine, as well as break apart then tranny / engine and see what kind of clutch life is left.

Hopefully, it will be ready by end of year :-(

I am having fun driving the 318ti in the mean-time now that I have rebuild the suspension!

Want to sell me the airbox from the ti?
I want to replace the K&N and need everything.

I wouldn't mind the radiator shroud either.

I am still trying to sell the M42 and manual tranny before parting it out. Haven't had much luck yet though.

If someone is buying an M42 to replace their motor, they wouldn't need the airbox.
I'll trade my crappy K&N filter.

Agreed. You will be first on my list for the airbox when I break it. I am still driving it currently as I was hoping to find a buyer for the engine and tranny before I pulled it so it wasn't sitting in my garage longer than necessary.

I will sell you the airbox right now for $350 and toss in an engine for free :-)

Progress has still been slow, too many "get ready for the holidays" domestic duties. We are hosting a Christmas party for like 30 next weekend, so the misses is in full domestic chore list, not to mention two family trips to visit the Mouse this weekend.

Some progress at least:

- Pulled the engine and tranny from the 328i
- Sold the 328i shell for $150, turned into more of a hassle than I thought it would be
- Separated the engine / tranny to discover a like new clutch. Going to still swap out the throw-out bearing, and pivot as preventive maintenance
- Did plugs, gaskets, water pump (old one was like new), thermostat, idler pulleys, etc on the donor engine today
- Tacked the oil pump nut

Hopefully, I'll get to the tranny this weekend. I bought the detent upgrade kit for the ZF and new shifter bushings.

Maybe life in her by New Years?
