The old one had quite a bit of carbon buildup and after I took the unit off, I noticed that there were some substantial stress cracks in the body. The best part about it is: NO MORE FREAKIN' WHISTLE. One interesting thing I noticed on the new part was, even though it is a Bosch part, it is made in China. I knew that Bosch sourced parts from odd places like Israel, Brazil, Ukraine, etc. but I think that's the first China part I've seen. The old one was noticeably heavier but at the same time, the old one did not work. There's just something weird about putting a Chinese part on my BMW. I feel unclean... | | | 05-05-2012, 05:20 AM | #2298 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2011 Location: Lighthouse Point, FL Posts: 124 | Somebody stop me! I've been looking for another 318ti for some months now to replace the toy I gave the wayward son. I've run across a lot of junk for silly money and some nice ones, just overpriced for my tastes or too far away to make trips feasible. But today I saw a new local Craigslist posting for another Henna Red '98, reasonably priced but with just a bit more mileage than I wanted. A one-owner that just underwent a lot of well-done work. So I said, "Let's go look at it". And I did. And I ended up buying it. It ran very sweet, felt solid. Brand new Falkens on good stock wheels (they'll be replaced with a set of Schnitzers). Not perfect but about $500 away from it. Now I have to start cleaning out the warehouse to make room-the recently-arrived, near-mint 328is that's almost finished and then I'll start setting this one up. Next is to explain to my accountant that my 401K is moving into "hard assets"! | | | 05-05-2012, 12:57 PM | #2299 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | I finally replaced my nasty looking cowl cover... Now I just need a bit of detailing under the hood and I'll be good! I also Lexol cleaned and re-treated my leather, and also shampooed the cloth inserts, vacuumed up the mess and thew in some eBay 'M' front floor mats (fit is not perfect but they are nicer than my original ones which are shot!). Looks pretty nice inside now! Oh, also replaced the antenna grommet... | | | 05-05-2012, 05:00 PM | #2300 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | Swapped yet another alternator in. Reason I ask, I went through a few alternators and it ended up being a loose main engine ground(passenger side motor mount to frame rail wire). Gave me the same symptoms of a bad alternator. Usually took a couple months to kill a battery. Definitely worth checking. | | | 05-05-2012, 06:05 PM | #2302 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: MD/PA/DC Posts: 1,629 | One was a charging failure, this one was bearing failure. They are old original alternators, the one I just took off had like 230,000 miles on it. Still charges, but makes a hell of a whining noise. __________________ No more ti. | | | 05-05-2012, 11:50 PM | #2303 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Went Cumberland Airport Autox-ing. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-06-2012, 01:08 AM | #2304 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2010 Location: Wichita Falls, Texas Posts: 1,364 | Finally have the front base model bumper repaired, primed and sanded. Ready to shoot the Morea green paint on it tomorrow. This will be the first time I have ever touched up a car with anything other than a rattle can. I'm looking forward to doing it. | | | 05-06-2012, 01:26 AM | #2305 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | painted my rims, came out good for an amateur rattlecan job | | | 05-06-2012, 02:21 AM | #2306 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 05-06-2012, 06:34 AM | #2307 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2012 Location: Sacramento, CA Posts: 2,451 | - Installed a "new to me" MAF on the 97 sport. (Thanks Jean!)
- Cleared codes, observed fan activation and replaced some relays. Still observing as there seems to be no pattern as to when the fan kicks in. Kicked in today at 105c.
- Installed an ashtray in the armrest retro kit, filling a hole.
- Sewed tears in drivers sear bolster. Applied Magic Mender and backing and is curing this evening.
Before: After, but before adding the Magic Mender and backing material. Here's what the backside of the repair looks like after adding the Magic mender and backing material.
- Did the same for my 540it
- Washed both Ti's

Been on deployment for six months and still have a few more weeks until I see her again. While I was gone, had a new(used) M44 put in with only 57k miles. Can't wait to get home and take her out! __________________ Jeff G. 98 318ti msport SOCAL & Henderson, NV "beer is always the best choice when consuming the self-righteous" | | | 05-07-2012, 09:16 PM | #2310 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | Gave my baby a simple upgrade that has to be worth at least 50 HP ORG Stickers!!!!!!!! __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
