Default Dipstick o-ring

I drove my car around 2 miles today and when I got back, letting the car idle for ~3 minutes, I saw a HUGE oil puddle under my car. Saw it was dripping from the oil dipstick tube. I pulled it out and the O-ring had a huge gash in it.

I put a ton of Permatex Red RTV down and hopefully that will work, otherwise I'm going to the parts department to get another oring.

Just a warning for anyone that has a leak from that area, it's part 11431287541.

just replace o-ring. RTV makes a mess and will only be a temporary solution.

Well I have an o-ring but the reason I wanted to use RTV is because RTV does not oxidize and degrade like the non-buna rubber BMW likes to use. That's why the Vanos system fails after 100k. They use crappy rubber that is not heat resistance and is prone to oxidation at high heat levels. The RTV I used is very strong and I'm not sure why it would only be temporary. Anyhow, I did pick up the O-ring from BMW just in case.

That's the trouble with geniuses - they over think things.

Well, I might be over thinking it.

Or am I?

I'll have to ponder this.

its not that they use crappy rubber, its that Germany requires a certain percentage of all rubber to be made out of recycled material.

I didn't know about that but Porsche and VW/Audi use Bunadiene based rubbers for their O-rings... there's no excuse for BMW's crappy rubber. You can make good rubber with the mandated requirements.

and that makes the rubber crappy I think VWs have problems with the wiring insulation, I'm sure it's the same thing

No VW's stupid wiring insulation problem is due to their use of a flame retardant insulation that degrades after a few hundred heat cycles. So, basically if it heats up and cools down too many times it deteriorates. I just replaced our MB 95 E320 engine harness due to the same issue. It wouldn't even turn over. After I pulled it off, every single wire was missing its insulation. It was crazy.

Either way, crappy or not crappy. An o-ring cost 25cent and it's lasted ~10 years so I'd call that pretty good.

It was $2.02 with the CCA discount actually. My thing of permatex red high-temp silicone was $4.99 and it can make 100 of those which will last at least 20 years!

And my dad's Vanos o-ring was $30... and took 4 hours to replace as well as a cam alignment tool.

To each his own. With stuff like that several things will work. I almost always just go with the factory replacement though.

However, I'll jerry rig something in a hear beat if I have to.

Well we replaced it with a higher temp resistant/oil resistant buna ring.

Hope they don't do that with their condoms
