Default Getting a job question

Totally unrelated to bmws but you guys seem like a smart group so i'll ask your opinions.

I am an engineer by trade but I have had to settle for a sales job since the economy has been down and the construction market is near dead. I recently found a company here in ATL that I would like to work for so i personally delivered my resume to the HR department secretary (the HR manager was in a meeting). I got a call back within a couple of hours and they said they were very impressed and they wanted to set up an interview in a couple of weeks!

Two weeks go by and I heard nothing. it has been 4 or 5 weeks now. I call every day but I can never get through to anyone in HR. I have sent 2 emails touching base to follow up and nothing. No response. I am thinking it must be a matter of them not getting the emails and not checking their messages (I have left 1 voicemail). I really can't understand why they wouldn't call back as they said outright that they were interested in me. I am getting frustrated. Should I keep trying or am I being too pushy? Should I walk in the front door one morning and say hi?

I feel like I did the first time I got blown off by a girl in highschool. It's pathetic

you should really consider walking right thru the front door and try to talk to the HR manager maybe they forgot about it or the person that supposed to call you back isnt really doing his/her job, is better to look like a pushy workoholic than careless, even tho you keep trying to get thru to them but the manager probably isnt gettin word about you

I agree!! I'm about to go give my resume to Bosch here in Chicago for an internship. All be it a little late I'm still going to hand it in and see. I would just go to the office ask for the HR Manager and ask him if he got your resume. Tell him that you have time to do the interview the day you go in. Never go in during Lunch!

Actually I think you will get more acceptance on a Friday being a random walk-in.

How big is this company? Have you tryed to network through LinkedIn or anything? Google the peoples names and find a connection, even a common interest, to set you apart from the crowd. Being introduced or including someones name in your cover letter gets 10x the response compared to cold calls.

That said, I doubt they have not gotten your messages. They changed their minds or maybe you were hopeful in hearing their remarks when they were just being polite. Believe me I have experienced similar things lately and it drives you friggin crazy to not know.

settle for a sales job? hell, I just graduated in engineering and had a few engineering related offers, but took a sales position instead. Paid better, better benefits and more potential to move up in the company.

I would not call that settling at all.

The company is not huge, only a couple hundred people. I think I am going in tomorrow. If anything, I can get a definite answer if they are no longer interested. The fact that the HR department has not answered the phone even once in the three weeks of daily calls makes me think that they don't bother checking the messages either. I also think that my email probably slipped through the cracks as well. They might have been being polite but she actually said that they had my resume on file already and they had had their eye on me. I may be too optimistic but you cant get anywhere with a negative attitude.

As far as sales jobs go, I actually enjoy my job very much right now. I'm the sales manager for a small company that makes weapons accessories. It's a cool gig and it's a chilled out atmosphere, but the money absolutely sucks compared to what I was making a couple of years ago as an engineer. I took this job when I moved back to the states as a temporary thing until I found something more inline with my career path (commercial construction). I spent a lot of time, and energy, and money getting educated and working my way up to a satisfying and well paid job. I don't want to make another career change just yet.

Thanks for all the feedback dudes, I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow!

Hey man, I wish you the best of luck tomorrow. I'm putting together a resume for myself right now. Finally getting the motivation to work again after my 4 year vacation, lol. The job I'm considering has one opening and I'm fairly certain that I'll be going up against almost every police officer in Ventura County, so I'm not getting my hopes up. If nothing else, I'll have my stuff together for any other positions that might become available in the future. As of now, I'd guess that I probably have a 20% chance of landing this one. If I can get an interview, it'll be closer to 90%. Again, best wishes to you and wish me luck on mine. I really need this as I'm sure you're probably in the same boat.

Thanks and good luck to you too! Let me know if your department needs any lasers, flashlights, holographic sights, etc. I got your hook up!

Add me to the list of 318ti owners who are looking for work. Willing to relocate! Doesn't abuse/destroy innocent office equipment! Good personal hygiene! LOL

You forgot to mention "Comes complete with super spiffy wardrobe!"

Job hunting in this current economy is terrible. After getting laid off at the beginning of this downturn (18 months ago), I was burned out in just a few weeks trying to find work the traditional, old fashioned way. I can honestly say that I got my current job (and my last 2 jobs) via networking and prior business contacts.

Good luck everyone, and knock'em dead!
