Default Shift Linkage

Im in the middle of my M52 swap and have noticed the shift linkage and stabilizer bar was too long. I did a search and found that the linkages needed to be modified, now i was wondering what procedure were people taking to do this. I dont see how you can modify them without cutting and welding.

If not should i drop the ball and buy the linkages made for the 325i

thanks
Josh

I did mine on the weekend. In my case I modified the M Coupe shifter and cut 200mm (8 inches) out of bothe rods. I just had them re welded with a strenghting plate on each side. I measured up the Ti shifters and they needed 30mm (1.18 inches) cut out.

Cheers

Brian

I just order new ones from bmw made for a six cylinder. I work for Bmw so i got both linkages and an m3 shifter for under $80.00. Did anyone else modify the stock linkages in anyway, there does not see to be a plethora of info on this subject. This thread may become useful to someone in the near future.

It seems to depend on which transmission you use. If you install the 328/M sourced ZF transmission with the new engine, then it seems people have little problems with it. The 318 / 325 based Getrag transmission needs a selector rod that's a different size.

I don't have all the sizes handy right now, but I did have to try a few from other cars before I found one that fit. It's a pretty beefy rod though, I don't think I'd try to modify it and expect it to be as strong.

Ok after ordering a new shifter, shifter mount and shift linkage ive got a sweet setup. Im using the stock getrag transmission and with an m52. The problem was the linkage and shifter mount were too long. By using the six cylinder parts everything almost bolts right up. I did how ever have to modify the shift linkage in order to clear the drive (just bent it like the stock ti one). I also used a m3 shifter lever and had to bend that also, otherwise it sits too far towards the pass side.

Hope this helps anyone with the same questions in the future..

Well mine didn't work too well. The shifter rubbed on the guido in 2nd, 4th and reverse. So I tried the Ti gearstick with the modified shifter rods and it no longer rubbed but I couldn't select 2nd or 4th gear. Went back to the M coupe gearstick but used a six cylinder lower shifter and it all works perfectly.

Cheers

Thats exactly what i order, but if was definitely rubbing. What transmission are you using? Or what year shift linkages? It rubs on the balancer of the TI drive shaft (were the transmission meets the end of the shaft).
