Question engine noise, whine, louder when engine warm

Fellow Bmw owners, mechanic? motor head?,(I am not)

I am looking for a little help in regards to a noise in my 1996 bmw 318ti. It has 186,000 miles & runs great, but it whines (maybe like crickets at night)& is louder when engine is warmed up /hot. Seems like is dissapates some when gas is applied. After warm, when you turn the engine off it continues to make the noise for maybe 3-4 seconds long... like saying EEEEeeeeeeee... till it ends. pretty noticable as my wife says "she can hear me coming"!!

I have a local "american car" mechanc/friend that has found a few vacum leaks in the exhaust /maniflod area & says the noise may be the "bearings" going in the water pump... Sound right? If so, should I replace the fan clutch as I have heard on some of the chat?

I want to try to give him some additional diretion to look as I really don't want to take it to a BMW dealership.

I appreciate any comments/directions from anyone else out there...
thanks again, Jayzer

If the noise keeps going after the engine is off it sounds unlikely it is anything belt driven like the water pump. Keep looking for other symptoms. I can't tell from your post if the problem is vacuum leak or the cooling fan or fan clutch. Anyway it doesn't sound like a major problem so far, but I bet your driving experience will be enhanced by fixing it.
