Me either!

I'll be glad when it's "in the can" and I can just fill orders...

That's not good news. I thought I was good to go when I bought the whole car.
How "unpleasant" is it?

No time to work on the book the last few days. But I promise it will be worth the wait. All the interesting bits of information I've been collecting since 1998 is going in. I even found a copy of the bulletin BMW sent to the dealers to get them up to speed on the (then) new 1995 M3 Lightweight. I forgot I even had that!

You have to cut up the Z3 harness because component locations are different.

Trust me, or don't. It is easier to get a 328 harness and swap that onto the motor before you put it in the car.

or easier to just convert it to OBD1

If you don't plan to sell it, or only use it off road, that's fine.

More and more states are plugging in their cars, and you never know when the switch will happen (it happened in CT without any notice or warning)... If you see someone a car like this, and their state plugs in, you may be held liable and have to get the car straightened out or buy it back (regardless of "as-is/where-is" when sold). That's the good news. Depending on what state(s) are involved, they may bring criminal charges as well. Based on the current climate (witch hunt against all diesel engines and their emission compliance) I would be even more careful than ever with this sort of thing.

And by the way, OBD-I is very limiting with regards to engine tuning and diagnostics. Even on a race track, I'd still run OBD-II for all its benefits.

Thank you Jim. Good to know. I would like to use it much as possible from this Z3 (gauge cluster, ECU, etc.)
Do I just need a 328 engine wiring harness?
I guess I really need this book!

I think harness and DME will do it.

Of course ETM for both the ti and donor so you can sort out the wiring.

Then a way to do the EWS alignment.

I don't really know what those abbreviations refer to, DME & EWS.
If there's a reliable way to get rid of the coded key system I'm all for it. This is a dedicated 24 Hours of Lemons race car

DME is digital motor electronics (ECU)
EWS is driveaway protection.

EWS can be coded out of the DME or a hard wire bypass can be done. The bypass method is out on the web but I do not like to share the method openly due to those who might use the information for taking cars... I deliberately don't have it in my book either.

What's different about the DME that comes in the Z3 2.8?

Different tune for the 2.8 compared to the 3.2 Otherwise identical and either DME can be tuned for either engine because it's the same Siemens MS41.1 DME.

And a manual/book update. I did another once-over and it is set at 313 pages. I have inquired with the editor who will be going over it and will update again once I have her schedule.
