Sorry to barge in late on this, but it sounds like the rack to me.

Get it up on a lift or on stands, and grab one of the wheels. Rotate it as if you're turning, and have somebody else tell you when the other wheel moves. They should move together almost immediately. Turn the wheel back and forth and feel for play or hard spots in turning.

Any excess play is a worn rack. If you're having trouble turning it you've probably got a very worn rack.

I have no problems turning. I heard it again today and it sounds/feels like something is hitting either the steering shaft (from the wheel to the rack) or the steering knuckle. I have a differnent setup because the DASC requires relocating a few things close to the knuckle/shaft. I'll post my findings.

I think I found the problem....

The installation of the DASC involves relocating the DISCA (?) valve. You basically just leave it hooked up but ziptie it under the SC so you don't get a CEL. Anyways...It appears the DISCA valve was rubbing and jamming against the steering knuckle. I tied it out of the way, so we'll see if that stops it. You can see in the pics that it was rubbing enough to rub it down to bear metal.

Yes, you will NOT have the same problem because your DISCA valve is actually in the right place.

hmz, I've read your posts here. I got the same problem. And my mechanic doesn't know what it is either. He told me that he would ask a friend a BMW garage if he knows something about this problem...

Well, today i picked up blue from the shop (bavarian auto) and i must say they when it comes to customer hospitality, they suck. I know that my car is far from perfect but the guy there was very rude by going over what i already told him was wrong and didnt need to be looked, I.E. brakes, radiator, water pump...but anyways, they left my car out front (on one of the busiest streets in perrysburg) with the doors unlocked and the sunroof flipped up and open. It has been raining for the past day and a half and who knows if they had the car unlocked and everything over the weekend that they had it. I was very unhappy with them. They got my rear done and cant complain that its now fixed.

Steering problem:

Blue needs a new rack. They said its actually the gear or whatever on the inside of the rack going bad. So now i need a replacement....my question though is, should i go with an m3 rack assembly or z3? Also what else whould i buy while im under there?

On a side note, i found out that the previous owner was/is a member on the board and read all of his previous posts....

Came across this post about my steering...
http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4358

Another note...i found out that my car was actually autocrossed which he neglected to tell me about. In his profile is says that its an ACTIVE model, but when he sold it to me i was told it was a SPORT, which i believed because i knew nuthing about Ti's or bimmers at the time. This sucks, but w/e, im over it and the previous owner.
