Get it up on a lift or on stands, and grab one of the wheels. Rotate it as if you're turning, and have somebody else tell you when the other wheel moves. They should move together almost immediately. Turn the wheel back and forth and feel for play or hard spots in turning. Any excess play is a worn rack. If you're having trouble turning it you've probably got a very worn rack. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 09-21-2006, 07:18 PM | #17 | doesn't care about you. I heard it again today and it sounds/feels like something is hitting either the steering shaft (from the wheel to the rack) or the steering knuckle. I have a differnent setup because the DASC requires relocating a few things close to the knuckle/shaft. I'll post my findings. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 09-22-2006, 12:55 AM | #18 | doesn't care about you. The installation of the DASC involves relocating the DISCA (?) valve. You basically just leave it hooked up but ziptie it under the SC so you don't get a CEL. Anyways...It appears the DISCA valve was rubbing and jamming against the steering knuckle. I tied it out of the way, so we'll see if that stops it. You can see in the pics that it was rubbing enough to rub it down to bear metal. __________________ '99 Dinan M3 | | | 09-22-2006, 01:03 PM | #19 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2005 Location: England, UK Posts: 1,288 | my fcuking wheel clicks from time to time!!! feels weird but turning itself always seems unaffected. had the flouid flushed and made sweet f a difference. garage checked the car over and said it was safe and they could spot anything so i am miffed too!! __________________ 1995 BMW 316i Cosmos Black Mods: • Magnex Cat-Back Exhaust • Smoked Corner Lights + Repeators • M3 17" Wheels • De-Baffled Air Box • AC HandBrake Handle and Gear Knob • DEPO Euro Epsiloids + Predator Chronium Rings • Chrome Interior bits •IE Poly-Urethane RSFMs • Kenwood Power Series Audio • Powder Coated e36 325 Front Callipers • Sports Seats | | | 09-25-2006, 11:50 PM | #20 | Junior Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: CA Posts: 16 | Quote: Originally Posted by DustenT I think I found the problem.... I got the same problem. And my mechanic doesn't know what it is either. He told me that he would ask a friend a BMW garage if he knows something about this problem... __________________ BMW arctic silver 318ti, 5-spd OEM-armrest - Smoked Corners, Smoked sidemarkers - M3 Contour Rims - K&N Inlay filter - Koni 1130 Sports kit suspension - Cross-drilled Sport Brakesdiscs, Ferodo DS Brake Pads, Sparco Steel-flex Brake lines - Back Strutbar - M-tech Steering wheel | | | 10-06-2006, 03:48 PM | #24 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2004 Location: Port St. Johns, Florida Posts: 2,242 | Quote: Originally Posted by Bluebimma It only "clicks" on mine on the first half turn to the left or right...and thats only every once in a while, whether its hot or cold. | That's what I get. | | | 10-06-2006, 04:11 PM | #25 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | I recently bought another set of 16x7.5 rims and tires and noticed that i actually have "play" in my steering. I know that my car is far from perfect but the guy there was very rude by going over what i already told him was wrong and didnt need to be looked, I.E. brakes, radiator, water pump...but anyways, they left my car out front (on one of the busiest streets in perrysburg) with the doors unlocked and the sunroof flipped up and open. It has been raining for the past day and a half and who knows if they had the car unlocked and everything over the weekend that they had it. I was very unhappy with them. They got my rear done and cant complain that its now fixed. Steering problem: Blue needs a new rack. They said its actually the gear or whatever on the inside of the rack going bad. So now i need a replacement....my question though is, should i go with an m3 rack assembly or z3? Also what else whould i buy while im under there? On a side note, i found out that the previous owner was/is a member on the board and read all of his previous posts.... Came across this post about my steering... http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4358 Another note...i found out that my car was actually autocrossed which he neglected to tell me about. In his profile is says that its an ACTIVE model, but when he sold it to me i was told it was a SPORT, which i believed because i knew nuthing about Ti's or bimmers at the time. This sucks, but w/e, im over it and the previous owner. __________________ 1995 Hellrot Clubsport 318ti -Gone 1996 Schwartz II Sport 357ti - 5.7L V8 LS1/6 1997 Moregrun Metallic 318ti - Gone 1998 Schwartz II sport 318ti - M50TUB25/5 | | | 10-18-2006, 07:19 AM | #29 | Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: Roermond, Netherlands Posts: 41 | Hmz, a new rack, what kinda rack ?
