Default Seems like the clutch isn't engaging

I am guessing the clutch cylinder is going, but not sure. Sometimes I can shift, sometimes I can't . When I can't shift, I have to turn the car off, then I can shift into any gear. There is a 50/50 chance that I'll be able to shift again.

Ideas? I am going to have it looked at this week, but would like to try to troubleshoot it myself so don't get raked over the coals.

Thanks.

Is your brake fluid low? The clutch uses brake fluid to actuate the slave cylinder. Does your clutch pedal feel mushy?

Press the clutch in a few times and then look under the car and see if you can see fluid leaking out of the transmission bell housing. The slave cylinder seals can fail and leak the brake fluid into the trans.
