Sub Problems

I recently had a new JL 10" sub with amp installed. It has been working fine for the past month but just the other day it magically turned off. I made sure to check the fuses in the sub box and also by the batery, but none of then have been blown. And I also checked every connection going into the box. Then this morning on my way to school it turned on after about 5 minutes of the radio being on....WTF? What would cause this? Could it maybe be because my batery was low and needed to be recharged, or could it be something else?

Is the amp on? or does it turn off? when the sub goes out. Constant power? The amp could have been over heated perhaps. That happened to my buddies system. Check if its all grounded, no loose connections,or could just be a defect...
all those 3 things i just mentioned happened to him.

what type of amp do you have?

sounds like overheating.

does the amp have space to breath does it have an internal fan?

i had an amp in my old honda pushing my 2 jl 12's and it would over heat when it was under the seat and i moved to to the trunk and never had a problem with it over heating again til i moved to texas.

i now have an amp with a fan and i get away with it having little space to breath again.

also possibly your remote wire is loose or ground is loose.

when the sub stopped working did the amp still have a light on?

does your amp have an overheat light?

I will check if it has an overheating light. I'm pretty sure that it is not overheating though...I have had it cranked for 4 hours before and there was no problems. And it is also always cold in my car, I live in Canada. When it turned off my volume was low and my car had only been on for a few minutes. If it turns off again I will check if it is receiving any power.

But could a sub stay powered down from a low batery. I do sometimes listen to music without the engine on. Maybe I had done it for too long one time

the amp should still turn on if the car will will turn on. especially if you are driving the battery will give it plenty of power.

i would say take it to the place that installed it and have them check it ut im sure it wont cost you anything unless something broke but i doubt it

Well its been a few days and it hasn't turned off yet? Maybe it was just a fluke occurance. Thanks for all the advice guys, but hopefully I will never have to use it. lol

Check where your ground is wired to. I have had this happen before with a bad ground. Maybe it rattled loose or something?

What will the wire look like? Will the amp have a label indicating the ground wire?

yes it may be black or maybe clear but it will say negative or neg or have a - symbol

I would say u are in the clear. i had this happen before. amp got hot and cut itself off so it could cool down without ruining itself. Happens to most amps when they over heat. I have overheated one plenty of times.....too many to count and the amp and speakers still work fine.

My ground is brown, but yea it happen to me too, just moved the ground wire and hasn't happend to me again. But yea check all you wiring, you could have wires touching, there could be a cut along one of the wires, or it could just be your amp. Have you tried a different amp?

No, actually this is my first ever sub box so I don't have any other amps to test with. Maybee I will move my box a little farther from the back of my seat. It might help the amp cool off better. My set-up seems to be working fine now. Its good to hear that this overheating problem will not damage anything permanently tho.

I would check the remote wire and the ground. If you have a multimeter, you can check both of these relatively easily. My guess is one of them is either lose or pinched, which would cause the amp not to turn on. The amp has to actually be on and have been running for a while before it will cut out due to overheating. The other possibility is that a speaker wire could be making contact with something it shouldn't, causing the amplifier to go into a fault mode. So next time this happens, see if the amp lights are on along with the fault light, it may be the speaker wire (in the box, at the box, or at the amp). If the amp lights are not on, then I would check remote and ground wire. If you need to know how to work a multimeter, post a reply

Ok, today on the ride home I took off at a light quickly and I guess my sub cut out as I was doing it. After I realized my sub had cut out I turned off my radio. Within 5 seconds I turned it back on and my sub started to work again for the rest of the ride home. When I got home I felt my amp and it wasn't hot at all (pretty much frozen actually). What gives? This is getting irritating.

Last time my sub cut out I checked out my amp. There was a red light alluminated on the front of it. But the light is also on when my sub is working. So I am not really sure what this means. Im gonna check my wires once more but if this persist I'm gonna take it back to get fixed.
