It has 220k miles. I replaced the main belt tensioner and pullies. It still sounds like a tractor, although a little better than before. I expected the squeaky/whistling sound to go away with the new pullies, but there's still a loud whistling. It's audible in the video. I had a mechanic friend tell me he went though the same with a 318 and never chased down the source. Can anyone tell what that noise is? Or any of the other noises? The motor runs decently well, but has a major case of "I sound like a tractor" Suggestions/diagnosis welcome and appreciated! Or perhaps I should just change the oil and drive the hell out of it! | | | 04-18-2012, 05:58 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2011 Location: Broomfield,Colorado Posts: 664 | I know this is off topic but i saw your rims in the video can you tell me what size tires they are. they look very low profile. thanks in advance and sorry for the off topic question | | | 04-18-2012, 06:08 AM | #3 | Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Grass Valley Posts: 30 | Quote: Originally Posted by black98 I know this is off topic but i saw your rims in the video can you tell me what size tires they are. they look very low profile. thanks in advance and sorry for the off topic question | Tires are 225/50r16 Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105's. I did hear a little cricket noise which could be the alt, wp or ps. or just a new belt setting itself in the pulleys | | | 04-19-2012, 12:52 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Jul 2009 Location: Ft Defiance, AZ Posts: 686 | i don't hear anything too out of the ordinary __________________ 1999 BMW 318ti 2005 MINI Cooper S | | | 04-19-2012, 01:50 AM | #7 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | It could be excessively loud because you're missing the foam covered tube that runs from your airbox along the top of the radiator to the passenger grille. As for the engine, perhaps you could switch to a heavier weight oil. | | | 04-19-2012, 03:51 AM | #8 | Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Grass Valley Posts: 30 | Good stuff guys, thanks! Would 20w50 be too heavy? As for the crossover tube, I'll add that to my pick n pull list! | | | 04-19-2012, 04:43 AM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2004 Location: Sydney, Australia Posts: 593 | Sounds like some of the bearings in the pulleys need some wd40. They may need replacing soon if they're wearing out. | | | 04-19-2012, 06:12 AM | #10 | Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Grass Valley Posts: 30 | Quote: Originally Posted by RAiMA Sounds like some of the bearings in the pulleys need some wd40. I run 5w-30 synthetic here in SoCal, but for older engines I prefer a 10w. | | | 04-19-2012, 07:16 AM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2008 Location: Los Angeles, CA Posts: 1,464 | Quote: Originally Posted by cooljess76 I think 20w might be a little too thick. I would only run 20w if you had serious oil consumption problems. | | | 04-20-2012, 04:52 AM | #14 | Member Join Date: Apr 2012 Location: Grass Valley Posts: 30 | I'll try some synthetic 10w-40, or something close to that. I don't burn any oil at all right now, but it's ready for a change. Also need to drain the cooling system and put in some BMW blue coolant, it's got water in it right now... I guess I could WD40 my pullies, but for someone as ocd as myself, is there an alternative to that stuff!? | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
