Default This doesn't sound good.. with video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRVBc...ature=youtu.be

Hi guys,

Been doing some work on my $350 ti.. It has 220k miles. I replaced the main belt tensioner and pullies. It still sounds like a tractor, although a little better than before.

I expected the squeaky/whistling sound to go away with the new pullies, but there's still a loud whistling. It's audible in the video.

I had a mechanic friend tell me he went though the same with a 318 and never chased down the source.

Can anyone tell what that noise is? Or any of the other noises? The motor runs decently well, but has a major case of "I sound like a tractor"

Suggestions/diagnosis welcome and appreciated! Or perhaps I should just change the oil and drive the hell out of it!

Tires are 225/50r16 Hankook Ventus V4 ES H105's. Not sure what the stock size is for a 16 inch rim, anyone know?

Sounds normal to me. I did hear a little cricket noise which could be the alt, wp or ps. or just a new belt setting itself in the pulleys

It could be excessively loud because you're missing the foam covered tube that runs from your airbox along the top of the radiator to the passenger grille. As for the engine, perhaps you could switch to a heavier weight oil.

Good stuff guys, thanks!

Would 20w50 be too heavy?

As for the crossover tube, I'll add that to my pick n pull list!

Sounds like some of the bearings in the pulleys need some wd40. They may need replacing soon if they're wearing out.

I think 20w might be a little too thick. I run 5w-30 synthetic here in SoCal, but for older engines I prefer a 10w.

Agreed. I've run 0w-40 in my ti with 175k miles with no real problem in oil consumption, but 10w-40 should be fine. I would only run 20w if you had serious oil consumption problems.

I'll try some synthetic 10w-40, or something close to that. I don't burn any oil at all right now, but it's ready for a change. Also need to drain the cooling system and put in some BMW blue coolant, it's got water in it right now...

I guess I could WD40 my pullies, but for someone as ocd as myself, is there an alternative to that stuff!?
