Default Exhaust Failures - twice in a month

How do.
Have had some serious problems with my 98 318ti exhaust. Both parts were welded together in the middle(??) so had it replaced. Within about a month a weld on the muffler just up from the back box had split. Now the pipe from the flange to the cat has split!! Exhaust system was a cheapo, and the support bracket from the gearbox to front section was missing - although a local specialist says that the exhaust mounting is solid enough for this not to cause any problems. Already had one part replaced under warranty. Any advice?

Thanks muchly

hello mate, sorry for the delay in getting back to yoy , dont take it personal

sounds like the exhause was a, as you say "cheapo" system, but in any case it should have the rellavent hangers to mount the bastard

normally the downpipes/cat are bolted to the catback box, not welded.

this makes me wonder id it was a compacy or an e30 exhaust?

the e30 pipe has no hangers, in need a wraparound type hanger on the box itself,..

also the rear box is a weld on only job, so i think its possible you have had this mounted (possibly by accident??)

did you get any pics of the old and new box side by side, or mabey just of the new box at least, so we can have a butchers

Thanks for the reply Mallard.

The original exhaust had been welded together at the central flange - it only comes in two peices. The first replacement cracked a weld just behind the rear silencer, this part was replaced. Then the new cat box cracked just at the flange area. This was over a space of about two weeks while I was waiting to get a hold of a bracket to hold it up that comes from the gearbox. The bracket is now installed, but the exhaust still doesn't sound wonderful - never mind, have a new problem!!!
