Thanks for your explanations.

Then IŽll look for a Z3 4 Cyl steering rack

Edit:
I looked up the steering rack at the online spare parts catalog. The steering racks are the same at the "normal" Z3, no matter if it has a M43, M52 or M54 engine.
So a steering rack from a non-M Z3 would have 2.75 turns from lock to lock?

The part number is 32 13 1 095 575.

Am I right?

Yes, any non-M e36/7 (Z3) uses that rack. I double checked my self to be sure and it's 2.7 turns...

I didn't do anything to it, but I drove it good and hard on a 30 mile thrash round the country lanes
Every time I went round a corner, I grinned to myself... apart from the times I was stuck behind this a-hole in a Mitsubishi Space Wagon who insisted on driving about 20mph below the speed limit...
But the autumn colours are so pretty this time of year - that kinda made up for the snail brigade!

i've developed a slight miss at idle at start up but no CEL, I found the vacuum hose between the fuel pressure regulator and intake manifold was almost in two pieces, replaced that at lunch today, we will see what happens

Once you remove the screws holding the headlight unt, the side marker light will come out with the headlight. The clip is on the side of the unit, between the little slide rails for the corner light.

be gentle with the sidemarker rails... The sidemarkers are attached only to the headlight unit and just have a long pin on the other side for alignment when installing.

Corner lights (not fender sidemarkers, btw...)
