We have dual mass flywheels. Single mass fylwheels are in the e30s. Dual mass flywheels help to keep the driving feel "civilized" and comfortable rather than sport like. There is a lot more weight on them to keep the revs from dropping so quickly and making shift points smoother and not so jerky compared to a lightweight flywheel.

Is yours messed up or something? If i were you and needed to replace the flywheel, id go with a lightweight one, nothing extreme, but something a little lighter than the stock 28lb one.

I would not buy a dual mass flywheel as a replacement. They are outrageously expensive ~$900. Just get a single mass and it will be cheaper and work well. I would not get a very lightweight version. But something in the 15-20lb range?
You can also swap a M20 single mass flywheel in, but you have to change the pinion on your starter, too.

There is actually a choice when it comes to stock 318ti flywheels and clutches. If you look in the ETK (www.realoem.com) the european M42 318ti had a single mass flywheel and a dual mass flywheel. I assume the difference was AC vs. no AC. I think all American cars had AC, thus only dual mass flywheels.

Sorry for the shamless plug, but I have one I've been trying to sell for a while. http://318ti.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11586

so this can be used on a US ac car with no vibration problems ?

I just installed an Aluminum flywheel (13lbs) and M3 clutch and I can't notice any difference vibration wise, even with the air on. I also didn't notice any drivability difference, besides it being just slightly easier to stall from a stop, it still shifts very smoothly. It now revs much quicker in 1st and 2nd and doesn't slip!
