Default blackout rims

What is the best way to black out rims? I want to paint my rims black but I'm not sure if just using a rattlecan will work or if I will need to have them powdercoated or something?

Cans will work but powdercoat will last longer and most durable.

I recommend Dupicolor Wheel Coating paint, it's holding up very well on mine, comes in several colors, and is only $6/can. I used "Charcoal" color and I haven't noticed any chips in the last 6mo.

Rattle cans work fine, but take your time and do it the right way. To start you should probably lightly sand your wheels to get out any rough spots and to make it easier for the paint to stick. You don't have to go to the bare metal, just a nice going over. Then you may or may not want to prime them. After that just put on several light coats with about 15 minutes between them. That will allow the paint to dry and help you avoid crackling. After you are satisfied with the coverage let them sit overnight and apply a few coats of clear the next day. Even though rattle can paint won't last as long as powdercoating, it's pretty good, and you can't beat the cost.

PeteN,
Thanks for the pics. Exactly what I was looking for. Looks like I'll go that color. Nice against black.

yeah one of the reasons I want black rims is so the brake dust won't be so visible since I wash my car maybe once every two months and I'm too broke to get low-dust pads or kleenwheels
