The diagram I was looking at was on realoem.com. I know mine does not have a spring on it from doing the oil changes, but up until now I was not aware there was supposed to be one. Am I looking at the diagram wrong or is there really supposed to be a spring on the inside of the filter housing cap? | | | 01-01-2009, 04:49 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 1,895 | __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 01-01-2009, 04:56 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Land of the Vikings Posts: 2,700 | Guessing u have a 318ti m42. i have never seen a spring in the oil filter housing, or on the cap.. the pic is here nesīpa? oilfilter housing with Metal top with Plastic top.. the only thing i can see is the meshing at the top of the plastic top. That second diagram is the one I was looking at, just below the threads on the cap is what I was looking at. I got the filter housing leak fixed and was surprised at how easy it turned out to be. | | | 01-01-2009, 05:19 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Aug 2006 Location: Texas Posts: 57 | Lucked out by knowing the team manager for the Classic BMW race team. He got me the quick hookup on the parts I needed. Next is the valve cover gasket. | | | 01-01-2009, 05:49 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2006 Location: Wisconsin Posts: 1,895 | Quote: Originally Posted by trackfiend I got the filter housing leak fixed and was surprised at how easy it turned out to be. | That is good to know - I recently did the valve cover gasket, but I have to get to the filter housing next... __________________ ... ʎɐqǝ uo pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ı ǝɯıʇ ʇsɐן ǝɥʇ sı sıɥʇ | | | 01-06-2009, 06:18 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Feb 2007 Location: Beaufort, SC Posts: 298 | my 318 m44 is leaking right around the area near the block and the filter.>>> is this the gasket that you just replaced>>? | | | 01-06-2009, 06:29 AM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2008 Location: Las Vegas Posts: 12 | Quote: Originally Posted by Vazquezp my 318 m44 is leaking right around the area near the block and the filter.>>> is this the gasket that you just replaced>>? | http://www.318ti.org/forum/showthrea...hlight=housing | | | 01-06-2009, 06:44 AM | #9 | NOBODY F's with the Jesus Join Date: Oct 2006 Location: Ventura California Posts: 7,824 | It's not just the gasket that leaks, usually it's the o-ring around the cylindrical "bushing" that becomes hard and flattened. __________________ 4 MORE YEARS BABY!!! | | | 01-06-2009, 03:20 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Stamford, CT <-> Boston, MA Posts: 1,393 | To answer the OP, that's not a spring. It's more of a plastic grill/shroud that sits inside the oil filter. It's attached to the cap. I'm sure everyone's already figured this out.. but if someone strolls across this thread, so they're not confused __________________ BMWCCA #403399 2012 Mini Cooper S Clubman, 6-Speed Loaded 2001 325xi, Winter Package, 5-Speed Traded 1998 318ti, Active, Automatic, TOTAL LOSS R.I.P. 10/20/08 Bilstein Sport Shocks/Struts .
