Default 318Ti Longevity

I'm thinking about purchasing a 318Ti but I'm a bit put off about some extreme mileage on this car. It has 200,000+. I'm not sure how well the car was maintained as it is used. You can never tell ya know?

My real question is how reliable, and durable, are the 318 hatchs? Can the M42 and manual tranny hold up to mileage like that?

I'm seriously thinking about the car as I'm a prior BMW 2002 owner. What a great 4-cyl BMW. I'm thinking the 318Ti is the spiritual child of the 2002.

Thanks!

The M42s will outlast the M52 engines

Tranny depend on how it was cared for. Anyways trannys are cheap and easy to swap, like Diffs..and after 10yrs if you love the car investing in a new trans might not be a bad I idea.

I just passed 260,000 miles! Original motor, 5 speed transmission, clutch. From what everyone says, the m42 motor is bulletproof! Mine is a 95.

What part of town are you in?

+1, if you could get a really good deal on the car due to excessive mileage then by all means, do it! If the engine only lasts another year, oh well, you can always do an engine swap.

I'm in West Over Hills. So not that far from Midlothian!

Thanks for the info guys.

I can possibly get a good deal on this one but I'm not looking to take on someone's created problems. BUT that being said..I know if BMW cars are anything like the motorcycles they'll last close to forever.

I know this car has a worn interior but I have no idea what the mechanical aspects are like. Which, to me, is the most important. I'm thinking I'd get this one and start in on Auto-X's, HPDE's, etc.
