I have three sets of wheels and tires and have gone through several different brands of tires as well. Here are my observations ( this is assuming you don't have any mechanical problems, air cleaner is fresh , and car seems to be running right). Take these with a grain of salt. Just trying to get you to sort driving style from the car's capability. 1. Sitting in traffic is zero mpg. Take a different route. Keep moving 2. Skinnier tires go further. If you have some big wide high performance tires that would do well at an autocross, and you want mileage, take em off and get a set of smaller tires. When I first got my car , it came with 185/65-15 inch Michelins. Didn't stick too well, but wow! 31.5 mpg in town and 36 on the road. When I put my 16 inch Sport compound on, I dropped to about 28 in town. That's 3 1/2 mpg just from changing tires. Just remember, the wider the tire, the more rolling resistance. 3. Shift early. While it may feel like you need to shift at higher rpm's just to get anywhere, shifting at 2500-2800 will most certainly help. 4. Don't speed. Mileage drops proportional to speed. While our cars do quite well at 75-80 mph, the best mileage is obtained by going slower. I am not suggesting you get run over for the sake of mileage, just don't accelerate as hard and cut a couple of miles per hour off your cruising speed. 5. Use your A/C sparingly. It seems to knock off 2-3 mpg. I still get over 28 mpg in town ( my car has over 138,000 miles and is a full Dinan "S" package) Best car I've ever owned. But seriously, my O2 sensor went bad and my mileage dropped down to under 25. I replaced it and now I'm back up to 30-33mpg. | | | 05-22-2006, 09:09 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Golden, CO Posts: 283 | Ok well like i said before... i have changed all four spark plugs ( sorry for the singular refrence earlier), all filters (oil, fuel, air, etc.), ignition wires, flushed out the engine using ATF and now new mobil 1, new 02 sensor, flushed trans, and flushed ratiator. With all of that , i still am getting 18.6 mpg. So i am completely out of ideas. I am running some wide tires but it shouldnt make me get 19 mpg. So if you can think of anything else please let me know i am out of ideas. | | | 05-22-2006, 09:38 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2005 Location: Portland Oregon Posts: 1,363 | Goto the shop, get your car looked over by some experts. Maybe its a computer issue. | | | 07-27-2006, 07:34 AM | #10 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: bronx, NY Posts: 8 | I noticed when I change my muffler and put in a bosal exhaust my gas mileage increased by 2 -3 miles per gallon. There is also a big weight difference between stock exhaust and aftermarket. I went with bosal because it didn't make alot of noise. I have a 97 sport manual with 263, 2xx and get around 31.5 on ave. | | | 08-02-2006, 01:09 PM | #11 | Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: London Posts: 79 | just a thought.... how are you working out the MPG? if you're using the computer, it could be wrong?? (i don't know how it works, coz i don't have one). otherwise, i think it's pretty hard to work it out manually. i'd like to work it out on mine, coz my petrol only lasted me 2 weeks when only driving on weekends.....about 167miles. __________________ -Impyboy | | | 08-02-2006, 02:07 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: May 2006 Location: 43609 Posts: 3,425 | Quote: Originally Posted by impyboy just a thought.... how are you working out the MPG? if you're using the computer, it could be wrong?? Previously I was getting 25mpg, but in Utah on 85 octane gas got 410 miles on one tank and 406 on another for better than 30 mpg. That was with 3 people in the car and luggage and lots of hills. Is it the lower octane or thinner air? 97 base/auto | | | 08-06-2006, 09:19 PM | #15 | Junior Member Join Date: Jul 2006 Location: California Posts: 25 | Mine has 23.6 MPG.. I just refilled my '98 ti and read the odometer.. It's 303 miles per 12.84 gallons, which is 23.6 MPG.. I ran a parallel experiment on my '96 maxima, and it gave 25.0 MPG. Both about 30% highway and 70% city.. Frankly, I'm disappointed, as TI is slower, noisier and smaller and yet has worse MPG.. My TI is automatic, while the maxima is manual (the reason why it should go.. long story ), but can that actually impact the MPG a lot? The trip computer reads 32MPG on highway, and 24MPG in city, which is up to spec, except that it's not true. I would like to learn from this forum what I can do about it.. thanx.. | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
