We're having the same problem, did you ever figure it out? Which wiring are you doing, OBD1 or OBD2?

Default Which light is Check engine light

I just picked up a 1998 318ti, it had lots of little issues that I have fixed and now runs great. I need an inspection and want to make sure everything is working first. I was thinking the gear with ! in the middle was a transmission fault light. I pulled the clusted and there are two slots that say check engine. The one with a bulb gear ! that lights up and the goes out before I start the engine. I put a new bulb in the vacant spot, but nothing lights up. Gear ! symbol, seatbelt, traction control, ABS and Brake fluid all go out before starting the engine. Battery and oil go out after starting. Am I missing the check engine light or is it the gear ! symbol on this car. I have a code reader and fixed the other codes, the reader now says the MIL should be off when engine is running, but I never had a check engine light on. Thanks.
