Default CD changer installation in the ti

Hi everyone.

If you are considering adding the factory CD changer to your ti, now is the time to do it. Parts are drying up fast and "junk yard" parts are super-rare. Many did not opt for the rear changer in the ti, as it was an entry level car for BMW. But, you can still get brand-new parts from the dealer and add the changer today, 25-years later... (Changer itself is also available from the dealer, if you want a brand-new one, but I suggest "pre-loved" via eBay etc.)

PARTS LIST: (prices are current as of 10/25/22) red prices were not quoted recently and are direct from realoem. And probably low. NOTE QUANTITIES between P/N and price...

Bracket, CD-Changer (1) 65.12.8.369.926 1 $33.68

Covering Cap (9) 65.12.8.362.100 1 $1.35
Alpine (w/I-bus) CD Magazine 82.11.1.469.406 ? $32.50
6-disc CD magazine for the Alpine changer 82.11.0.026.418 in case you want more of them. (Not shown)

THE CORRECT CHANGER PART NUMBER is: 82.11.0.028.760 and it was in use on several models well into the 2000's. (manufactured by Alpine) These can be found quite cheaply (I paid $35 shipped for mine) if you keep your eyes peeled. Don't focus on the specific car it came from. These were used in 3's, 5's and Z's and likely others, so quite plentiful. Some come with wires attached that were hacked from the "donor" car, but this is not critical. Look for a clean, good condition changer, and be sure it is including the cartridge that holds the CDs inside.

MOST OF THESE DEALER PARTS COME DIRECT FROM GERMANY, so plan ahead.

The majority of the ti's are "pre-wired" for the factory changer. In addition to the wiring, the blind rivet nuts are already installed, so you mount up the bracket, plug in the wires and go. ALMOST. If you don't have these in your trunk, order the blind rivet nuts as well.

A very important detail is: on the sides of the changer there is a plastic box/cover that has several holes with a silver pin showing in one hole. Once the changer is at the mounting angle, the pin may need to be moved to a more appropriate location. Fully horizontal (flat) and fully vertical (opening pointing straight up) are indicated on this cover, and once at the final angle, you will most likely need to alter this angle from where it is when you get it. This helps GREATLY with controlling the skipping, so don't "skip" this step.

Otherwise, it IS plug n play. Your factory head unit (CD43, C43 or C33) have the controls to select the CD changer, and to then select one of the five CDs and then tracks thereof. The CD43 and C43 both display track information (also radio station information, if available) on the head unit. C33 does not have the display function (but does have the changer control function, so probably limited to CD "number" in the cartridge and track number) and was standard in tis prior to mid-'98.

IF YOUR CAR IS NOT pre-wired, you also need the "connection cable CD-changer (5) 65.12.8.360.672" and may need another cable as well. Two are connected to the changer, and it is not clear if this "cable" includes both cables. But it runs from the changer to the back of the head unit, so plan accordingly to have the time to disassemble your interior.

Not sure which radio you have, or if it's compatible? Well, if your car has the round tag in the trunk, stating it's pre-wired for CD changer, it's right. If it may have been changed before, check the connection on the back, which should have the small connector with the finer pins, on the lower left-hand side:

Earlier head units did not have the second smaller connection on it.

Please post here if you have additional details to share on your installation.

Enjoy!

I should add that you should plan to run a CD lens cleaner disc, unless you disassemble the changer and manually clean the lens.
