Default M3 power steering cooler/return pipe

Has anyone ever tried to use a M3 power steering cooler/return pipe on their ti? The cooler part of the pipe seams to be about twice as long on the M3. The seals for the banjo bolt at the rack are the same part #, and it looks like it would mount in the same position as the standard pipe. I plan on doing a p/s refresh here in a week or two and was thinking about swaping my current return line for the M3 verison. What do you guys think?

I've thought the same thing many times... There is a forum member here (eurohb) that has the M3 cooler line and since I believe that other than the gear ratio, all E36 steering racks are pretty much interchangeable, I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work w/o modification.

The price of the M3 cooler line, however, is almost double that of the ti cooler line.

Thanks for the reply. I can get one from my local dealer for $97, don't really want to spend that kind of money though. I am going to see if I can source one out of a salvage yard first.

I bought a new 328 line for $40 and am going to put it on this weekend. It's considerably longer than the ti line too.

Where did you find the return line for that price (I'm assuming it's the return line- rack to reservoir)? Realoem lists the '96-'99 M3 and 323/325/328 p/n's as the same, but Pelican lists a different p/n for the '95 M3 (and it's also about $50 more).

It was MTC brand from ECS Tuning, not the best but cheap and hopefully the hose wont leak as much as mine currently is. I was mostly interested in the extra cooling after reading this thread. Posts by "Tommy Samuels" are pretty awesome.

I still have the ti rack in my car with the S52 and all the M3 lines and it fits/mounts with no problems.

The only thing to be aware of is the possibility of the physical locations of the connections on the pump relative to the rack, as the M42/M44 both sit further back in the chassis (well, the front of the engine is further back anyway).

Other than that, I think it will be no problem at all.

This thread is only talking about the power steering cooler not the rack itself. Cooler mounts to the rack and has a soft line that runs back to the reservoir. The soft line is notorious for leaking and can only be purchased with a new cooler piece.

Technically the return hose diameter is larger on the 328/M3 than the ti line and the 328/M3 line has a pressure reducer hose clamped in while the ti version does not.

I also saw that MTC brand hose on ebay for $57, I'll have to check out the ECS Tuning site. I am now wondering if the pressure reducer that is in it will provide a different feel at the steering wheel.

I attempted to install the MTC pipe the other day, don't even bother ordering one. It didn't fit at all. I could have forced it to fit but I really had to bend it to do that and I didn't feel confident that it would last very long.

I'd imagine that a better quality version would fit fine, the MTC just seemed like a poor copy after I compared it to my stock ti pipe.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson with MTC, won't be buying any more of those parts.

I noticed this when I was flushing my P/S system last weekend- I ended up just clipping about 1/2" from the end of the soft line so that the connection would seal better with the new reservoir. 1/2" is about all the slack that you get in that line- the hose is now about maxed out, but not overly so (there is no tension on the hose, but not really any slack either). So far, so good...

I went to NAPA and got a foot of H1946 hose for about $4. It is transmission oil hose, 1/2" ID, fit on there great with a couple of hose clamps.

Well, that sucks. Hope you can get your money back on the pipe.
