since it's stock, it's technically a retrofit, not a mod

I'm certain my '95 sport ti came new from the dealership with an electric fan, I bought it new that way. I still have the fan / shroud / radiator laying around somewhere. I think the M42 is still out behind the shop complete without the front mounting.

I definitely have seen e36 318is' that did come with the engine-mounted fan, and my e30 318is also is engine mounted. AFAIK, all ti's came with electric fans.

Something I discovered today about the Z3 1.9

It appears that early productions had a mechanical fan and an electric fan IN FRONT of the radiator. My 1998 has only an electric fan between the radiator and the engine, just like most ti... Just to make things more complaicated...

we have a m42 4 door at our shop with a mechanical.

i asked the local bmw genious, Sid Gearhardt if he knows of any tis in the us with a mechanical and he said no so they must have done that to free up a little more power or whatever those crazy germans decided. lol
