Default What intake for S54 swapped E36

Hi guys,

I've got S54 swap from e46 on the way. Cooling, electrical and all other things are sorted expect intake setup.

As far as I know, due to S54 high flowing head it requires dense and fast moving air, which is no problem with stock e46 setup. But it simply doesn't fit in E36.

With K&N or similar pod filter it will lose around ~30hp. It was tested locally on a dyno with huge ventilator, first pass with hood open and second with shut on a friends swapped e36 drift build. He mostly uses without hood in events, so there's no problem for his application.

The closest thing I've seen was stock e46 m3 airbox with cut down lower part. But that way you still get hot air from engine bay.

I'm looking for working kits or DIY examples to feed cold air. Carbon intake is not an option at the moment and Z3M S54 one as far as I know is restrictive and very rare, haven't found one on ebay or elsewhere.

I wish I could remember who it was that was doing it, but I remember someone was trying to do the same kind of swap as you about 1-3 years ago. I am not sure whether the project was completed or at least it might not have been completed here in the forums. If I can find it again I will link to it. It would be interesting to find out because I have been considering such a swap myself, but last I remember the post I was referring to the guy said that there is some kind of difference in regards to the throttle cable or something like that. Good luck!

I used a AFE cold air intake with a K&N filter I did have to modify it a little for it to fit I still need to make a heat shield for but it works.
