So i've done some research, I am trying to surprise my girlfriend for her birthday by overhauling this M52 from this 328i I just bought for parts and swapping it into her car, I am using the ZF setup for my car(trans, driveshaft etc) her 318i is 5 speed swapped with a getrag. So far what I believe I will need to get the car going is: M52 DME Harness Cluster Align the DME to the 318 EWS(this will work right? rather then swap all the stuff from the 328) Radiator, hoses, etc. Exhaust Swaybar And thats all? Will her trans and driveshaft still work? I know there is several threads but none had a direct answer for me, I have limited time to get this all set up | | | 05-09-2016, 09:03 PM | #2 | Junior Member Join Date: Mar 2016 Location: Latvia Posts: 6 | So you need full EWS swap(EWS box behind glovebox, chip from key and DME from one car), gear shifter as 1.8 shifter is significantly longer. You can leave 318 gertrag on it, but you should get a 240mm clutch kit if you already havent got it. And I can't just use my INPA to align the EWS to the new computer? I dont feel like swapping the keys and all that jazz. Might as well just order a ews deleted dme. | | | 05-10-2016, 02:15 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | For M52 + getrag 250 you need the shifter parts from a 325 or 323. You should be able to align the EWS with INPA. http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/sh...ment-with-INPA __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-10-2016, 03:55 AM | #5 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2016 Location: Morrisville, PA Posts: 15 | I can still use the same driveshaft as well? I just used that write up to align the manual DME to this car's Ews not to long ago. | | | 05-10-2016, 01:20 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | I certainly hope the same driveshaft will work. I'm in the middle of my swap, I'll know for sure in a couple days. I have the front section of the driveshaft out and I removed the balancer so the shifter linkage would clear. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-10-2016, 02:42 PM | #7 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2016 Location: Morrisville, PA Posts: 15 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri I certainly hope the same driveshaft will work. Today I am ordering all of the gaskets and hoses associated with the M52, I want to drop this in and not have to work on it for a while..lol | | | 05-13-2016, 02:32 PM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | I put the driveshaft in last night the ti shaft did compress enough to fit but it was very tight. I almost thought it wasn't going to fit. The one thing I didn't know about was the shift linkage needs to be from 9/1994 or newer depending on the style of your shift rod joint. I have the new style rod joint but old selector rod so it's too short and the shift knob ends up angled way back. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-13-2016, 03:13 PM | #9 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2016 Location: Morrisville, PA Posts: 15 | Thanks so much for confirming this. So looks like last thing on my list is the shifter rod. It will need to be from an M50 car then i assume? Since the trans is a getrag? And i hope this works out considering this car is a 318i sedan and not a ti. :P | | | 05-13-2016, 03:48 PM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Yeah it should still work out. Shifter parts from a late M50 car or 98/99 323is will work. Both used a 6 cyl motor with the getrag transmission. I ordered the 9/1994+ selector rod, seems like the 9mm longer difference is exactly what I need to get the knob sitting correctly. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-13-2016, 03:52 PM | #11 | Junior Member Join Date: Jan 2016 Location: Morrisville, PA Posts: 15 | Quote: Originally Posted by spidertri Yeah it should still work out. You might want to refresh a few of the other bushings while it's all apart. The ball cup bushing, selector rod sponge, and the carrier bushings on top of the transmission are usually in pretty sad shape. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | 05-19-2016, 03:59 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Elizabeth City, NC Posts: 3,877 | Just to confirm, the later, 9mm longer, selector rod put the shift knob right where it is supposed to be. __________________ ~Dave~ 98 328ti Morea Grun slicktop 11 128i space gray slicktop 13 JGC WK2 Deep Cherry Search | RealOEM | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
