Default My "new" BRG 323ti

Well, it is not quite new, but I thought it might deserve some space at this forum. Last summer, I totaled my previous 323ti at a track day event. Due to that I had too many special parts for the 323ti, so I had to get another one.

After several months search I found this awesome 1999 model 323ti. I think the color is very rare and special being a ti. It is an individual color – British Racing Green. The car had only 73000km on the clock and was in mint condition. It also had AC Schnitzer lowering springs and 17” AC Schnitzer Type II Racing rims.

After I bought it I have mounted UUC short shift, e36 m3 instrument cluster and e30 m3 25% LSD. Hopefully, before this track day season I will have mounted the rest of the parts waiting to be mounted (Xbrace, KW Variant 2 coilovers, H&R Sway bars, AP Racing front brakes, e34 m5 rear calipers, S50B30 oil cooler, M50B25 inlet, just to mention a few).

More info about the car here: http://home.online.no/~krimp/sweb/photo_e36_323ti1.htm

I'm a owner of a 323Ti too, there is also have some mod's. Let's exchange some knowledge

Was any harder to put M3 cluster on it? Can you take some pics? I'm searching for the one that revs to 8000 rpm.

The m3 instrument cluster is bolt on. However you have to do the wiring to put the oil temperature to work. It is not a big deal if you know a litle bit about electronics, and not to forget, where to put the wiring. I can make a DIY, if someone is interested.

On my BRG 323ti I have used the original 323ti front cover (with black rings on grey background) on the m3 cluster. Here is how it looks:

On my previous 323ti I used the original m3 cluster, but with chrome rings, since the interior had original chrome line option.

Great!

If you can do this DIY for oil temperature work, I'll be very thankfull.

I track my car sometimes, and this is something that is missing.

Other options are Z3m coupe and roadster cluster, but this ones don't come with oil temperature.

I'll be waiting, thank you vey much

This DIY describes how to make the oil temperature indicator work when one has installed an e36 m3 instrument cluster in a non-m3. The DIY is based on experience with installing the e36 m3 instrument cluster in an e36 323ti. It is believed that this procedure will work in other e36 non-m3 with 6 cylinder engines.

The oil temperature has to be measured, and that job is done by the oil temperature sensor. The dimension of the oil temperature sensor is M12x1.5, and the original BMW oil temperature sensor could be used. The part number is 12 61 1 404 699.

Then, one needs to determine the location of the oil temperature sensor. There are several options. Two of them are mentioned here. Since the oil drain plug (at least for the euro M52B25) is M12x1.5, the easiest solution is to replace the oil drain plug with the oil temperature sensor. Another option is to use an oil distribution block, and locate the oil temperature sensor in it.

Next, one has to install and route a cable from the oil temperature sensor to the instrument cluster. The main obstacle is to find where to go from the engine bay and in behind the dashboard. I found it convenient to demount the glove box on the passenger side, and used a passage already there.

Then it is time to remove the e36 m3 instrument cluster. To do this one also need to remove the steering wheel. If you don’t know how to do it, please look on the web how to do it!

The last part is to attach the new cable to pin 13 on connector X16 (make sure it is not used i.e. no pin in the position). I used a pin taken from a female D-sub and soldered the new cable to the D-sub pin, and inserted it in the empty space at pin 13, connector X16.

Then it is time to mount every thing back again, and the oil temperature should now be working. Please notice that it may take up till 30 min. before the oil is hot enough to make the needle move.

Location of the connector x16:

More pics will follow, thats for sure! However the ACS mods will disapear since the ACS-rims does not fit over the AP Racing callipers

I will be using 18" BMW Radial Styling 32, staggered setup (from e46) as street wheels, and M Contour II in 17" for the track. Just waiting for the arrival of the Spring....

... or maybe I should use the ACS as track rims (need a spacer though) - resprayed in black with a yellow stripe? Like this ...
