Default Rattly Cat

My 'cat' has started making a 'rattly' noise

had a look / listen whilst i revved it and it definetly sounds knackered, kinda like sumin has come loose internally!

now it might be the case of a loose heatshield but i'm planning for the worst situation. gonna pop down mates garage so he can get it on the ramps 4 a closer inspection!

performance is still ok but sounds like cars running funny, maybe the damage in the cat is causing a slight blockage!

anyway had a quick search on the forum and found sumin about the possibility of the 'cat' having a 10year warrenty? is this correct? anybody know?

its a 1998 BTW

also anybody got any advice on what to do if the 'cat' is knackered, should i take the plunge and get a 'sports cat' or just get a stock BMW 'cat'

also any1 know about 'cat' replacement pipes?

any advice would be appreciated

my mate put two welds, on the heat shield. it stopped the rattle, but made it vibrate. its because the shield had expanded over time and was not a smug fit anymore. my fix was a replacement, not expensive at £130 inc vat. (non-genuine) a bmw one is £500!!!!!!

You can always remove the shield. If it still makes noise then it may be the cat itself.

Cheers,

There was a 10 year warranty on some catalytic converters on the ti. I'm not sure that it would apply to you UK guys as it had something to do with US EPA requirements for emissions equipment. The MOT might have something similar. I would check with your local dealership and see if your VIN was affected and if the warranty and replacement time frames are the same. There is a copy of the letter that BMW sent to us US folks floating around here somewhere. That might be a good thing to have in hand when you start asking about this. Good luck.

seen my mechanic mate this morning and he confirmed my fears!

the cat is dead, had it...........buggered

tried BMW dealer with the potential extended warranty claim as per this post clicky but no luck

customer services said they would have a look but i'd have to book it in to main dealer, then raise an inspection (which incures a charge) etc etc etc.

Sound like to much hassle!

Anyhow mechanic mate told me about BM Catalysts who he's used in the past!

Phoned them and they will do it for £180 which includes VAT+P&P.

Not to bad i suppose

Sry to hear of your CAT major bummer...

I had the rattle sound also, thought it was the cat. But wenn I researched with a friend it was the headshield on the stock exhaust that was rusted and came lose...

I tried the cheaper route by buying an aftermarket cat, but the car wouldnt pass inspection as the cheap cat was triggering the ecu and reading out as 'misfire' (mechanich tried to explain the details of this to me - something to do with incorrect backpressure - but I do not recall). Anyway, $1300.00 (had to buy OEM from BMW) later, the light went away & my car passed! good luck..

Headshield can be removed, but afterwards never put your car on high grass or weeds because they can catch fire.

I'm getting mine replaced for free under warranty since it's rattling. Covered because there was a recall, so 10 year warranty with unlimited mileage. Read the bottom of http://www.epa.gov/otaq/cert/recall/420b03015.pdf.

I just printed that out. My car now has the rattle and the CEL light. I don't care if BMWAMERICA claims my 1998 isn't covered. I'm taking that letter to my dealer and moving forward. My car is an April 1998, so I have 2 months to go.
