I've never taken the cluster apart to do this before so I'm afraid I'm of no use. If I recall correctly, you were suppose to note the position of the needles before removing them! Worse case scenario, like you said. Let the car warm up, idle should be around 800-900 (unless you know it's otherwise). And get out a GPS unit and see how the speedo is doing against the GPS unit.
