Turbo M50 Project Underway

My homemade brake bleeder!!!! I found out that the metal cap to Permatex Anti Sieze compound is exactly what size needed for the brake fluid reservior... I cleaned out the cap and popped a hole in it. I did need to put a small amount of teflon thread tape on the threads for the brake reservoir to get it to not leak. The pump is just an old weed sprayer! Worked like a charm to bleed the clutch and brakes!


It's closer to being driveable, but long from where I would like it to be! I do have a weekly car meet that I'm desperately trying to make it to tomorrow!

@Bubela, thank you for your kind words, and thanks for the encouragement, lots of hard work involved, should be worth it in the long run!! I would like to setup a dual pump, my current configuration doesn't leave much to work with. It's the stock pump in the tank, feeding a 255 walbro inline pump... I would look into a surge tank option so that when you do any cornering it will not be starved of fuel, the usual purpose of having a pump on both sides.



Special thanks to MrSqueelerz for coming by on saturday to check out how things were going, and he decided to donate a set of IE Subframe Bushings, since the ones I had were useless garbage. You can see the black ones do not have a bottom to keep the subframe from just popping out of the car...

Some updates... got the floor in the rear, ended up using aluminum diamond plate.

I had to weld in a ledge for the plate to rest on and attach too, was planning to use rivets to secure it, but after I busted my second 6 dollar drill bit, I said eff it, and bought some self tapping screws... It all was sealed with seam sealer and duplicolor rubberized coating!







Folded up the stock metal from the right side and MIG welded it to the frame rail to seal it up permanently!




Andy utilizing his abilities with the tig, we were going to mig weld the ledges in quick I forgot the gas on the welder a couple days prior, and figured why not get some chassis practice with the tig. I did most of the tig welding, still learning but it was working alright!!





Just excited that I actually used the tig for the car, haven't really needed it yet, but there is plenty of things to come!

Almost done, but the shiny diamond plate was neat, but it wasn't working for me, so I added the duplicolor rubber coating top and bottom of the car along with seam sealer on the seams, so absolutely no leaking, it helps some with the noise too!

This stuff lays done really nice, but the coverage isn't very good, about 4 cans into this, and I still need to do more!

So my OBX topmount manifold failed me, and their warranty dept hasn't returned any emails as of yet. (4days) so I'm a sitting duck... The manifold cracked on two main runners about 2 inches before the collector, examining it now that I know more about welding and the tig process, the welds are crap, and that's why it cracked. Not sure what I am going to do for the time being, but I definitely would like to drive the car soon!


Bob, the steedspeed mani, how do you like it? how much is it, and do you still have your old topmount? I really like the steedspeed concept!

So far, the steedspeed is great. I haven't tried to take it out with the motor in the car, so I don't know how easy/hard it is first hand. However, I hear it's pretty easy. That said.. Our turbo makes things tight. You gota fit it, clock it, pull it out, tighten the bolts, then put it back up there and tighten the bolts. (explaining it, now sounds like "yeah.. how else would you do it") Anyway.. as per performance.. it's great. Lots of guys use them for a reason I guess. It's about $1000. It's heavy though dude!! I weighed it.. I think it's 37 pounds.

That all said, I love it. Works great for what I wanted it to do. Makes boost, hasn't cracked (probably never will) and easily recirculates my waste gate.

I sold my old top mount.. but it might be for sale again actually. Check bfc fi fs threads.

All I'm saying is: when you've finally sorted this car, you better not sell it. And if you do, it better be to me.

Made it to eurowerks 6 this year!

Took 3rd place for the 90's class again... very happy with that considering the other two cars for 1st and 2nd were very dreamy!

Here's how the car sits, after many hot humid hours of cleaning, fabricating, painting, swearing, sweating, smiling, complaining!











Last minute roll bar and floor painting, 3 hours before the show!! Thank goodness for fast drying rubberized coating! :-D





Custom plate over the alternator cooling panel, intended to make it quickly, ended up spending like 4 straight hours to make this bad boy!! I found the metal from an old aluminum sign laying behind the shop, there just happened to be about 1sq foot of aluminum that wasn't bent or scratched, and proceeded to make something out of nothing! ahh haha


Mocked up, ready for drilling and riveting.



Coil packs got a nice wire tuck, and individually painted for a little flair! German flag ftw.



This is how the car looked 1 hour before the show started, spent a total of 15 minutes at the car was before the show, I barely remember all this, it seems like a blur. My mind is blocking it out!!







I had to reweld the exhaust and add in a exhaust valve cover tube, that pulls vacuum through the exhaust (slash cut tube, and check valve) also rewiring the coil packs for a cleaner look!



Some rewelds, a mix of old MIG welds, and some new tig welds, can't wait to get my hands on some 4" stainless tube because 4" exhaust is quite cool to look at

Turbo manifold copper spray, and I used this stuff for cast iron stoves to seal the manifold to turbo without a gasket! Holding up great so far!

Boost is back baby, it hits hard and fast once 4200 rpm's come around, a bit on the "laggy" side, but it hits full boost all gears immediately between shifting points it stay's loaded up!

Next goal, 1/4 mile for ya'll... need tires first.

He had family up north, being the freshly married man that he is. He needs to attend these certain family events, however soon he will accrue enough honey done's to spend them at certain circumstances such as Eurowerks, etc. etc. haha

It's weird how I do get sick of this car, I guess some cars "put out" enough to keep you pushing yourself to make it happen again and again... It helps to have car shows, and awards to make it all seem worthwhile, needless to say, the car is finally coming together to meet what I had in my envisioned in my mind.

It's a mostly stock m50, the motor was completely reworked, but the parts are stock replacements, etc. New timing chain, cam chain, m3 timing tensioner, new cam chain tensioner, all new seals in the head too, and bearings replaced, the rod and main bearings have ARP bolts or studs in place, also using ARP head studs, STOCK head gasket, new piston rings, waterpump, thermostat, welded oil pump nut, etc.

I'm over 20k miles on this engine already, it's put up with my "learning" to tune it with the AEM and been very forgiving to me!

I do have another m50 *vanos motor that is my plan to rebuild when I have some extra money laying around, although that doesn't seem like that will ever happen anytime soon lol but it would be a fully built 800+whp capable block and head, maybe push the ti to 600-800 whp, and set some records!!!

I forgot to mention, the TI got two awards at Eurowerks, the other one was for "Most Sleeper!"

I fixed my pressurizing cooling system a couple weeks ago, turns out I really needed to retorque my headstuds... I never did that, and ever since, the car has been ROCK SOLID!!! Even turned the boost back up to 15 and been pretty hard on it, even with a new rev limit of 7200!!

But I almost died the other day, or wrecked the car... the steering linkage snapped and I lost complete control of my steering while on a scenic cliff road in my town.

Check out the video, and I will get pictures of the steering linkage!

First on the list is to get power steering functioning again before the car hits the road. Last year the rubber flex disc broke and I fixed that, but this actually broke the aluminum steering shaft between the firewall and the rack and pinion.

Video: **** NSFW lots of swearing during the examination of the break, it was a pretty freak accident that, really freaked us all out... we weren't pressing very hard around the cliff corners but even if it broke at a normal speed, the amount of time it took to react, I wouldn't have been able to save it.

Did you see I ran a 10.9 a few weeks ago? Still lovin this turbo!
