Default Head Gasket Problems?

Ok, so Im thinking of getting a TI again as my DD so I dont have to drive the "new" E30 every day. But my last 96 TI sport left me with a bad taste in my mouth, because it blew 2 head gaskets. Hows yours doing?

Only the M42's had the profile gasket issue (which I'm not sure if that applied to `95 Ti's). Headgaskets generally don't go bad unless the car has been overheated, high miles, etc.

Headgasket problems seem rather rare in these cars. I just don't read about it much on here. My guess is your car had other issues leading to the headgasket failures.

I think both were due to faulty thermostats. My car go tincredibly hot out of nowhere the first time, and I blew it. Then my car actually blew my upper hose off, and blew it again.

And I thought the M44s had the gasket problem. I know the M42s are great engines for E30s, and never have the issue. Maybe if you just replace the thermostat yearly, youre in good shape.

Usually the t-stats get stuck open when they fail causing the car to run cool, my past Ti and current Ti both needed new ones due to them being stuck open when I purchased them.

These issues are so easy to deal with but I read about this everyday on BMW forums with either someone overheating their engine, bad headgasket, etc.

If you own an E36 replace the t-stat and housing, radiator and hoses, and waterpump every ~80k miles...it's not very expensive and it will save one from being stuck on the side of the road or even worse with an overheated engine. Also there are two coolant hoses that run in the back of the M44 (not sure on M42) that are plastic and are known to fail sometime usually before 130k miles. It entails removing the intake manifold to replace them.

M44. Sorry, meant to make that an M44 option. I blew some coolant runner along the side of the head on my TI. It got up to the red for about 5 minutes, til I got it to a shop, and it didnt blow anything. Though that could have maybe opened up the door for another head gasket getting blown. I dont really know thought. I suppose theres nothing wrong with these M44s, like Ive been so paranoid about.
