When the car starts to go above 50-60 mph, I start to hear this whining noise. When I slow down, it goes away. It's really interesting because when I'm in the car by myself and replicate those conditions, I don't get the noise. So I'm thinking it may be related to the weight distribution or extra stress on the suspension. My suspicions are further reinforced by the whining noise always coming from the passenger side of the car. Has anyone had this problem before? Did you figure out what was causing it? How did you fix it? Thanks ;-) | | | 01-31-2008, 06:55 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Quote: Originally Posted by zboot Has anyone had this problem before? Interesting how she only whines from 50-60mph though. __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 01-31-2008, 07:01 PM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | It's normal. I get a whine when I'm going fast too. My wife hears the same whine from me when she is driving. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 01-31-2008, 08:21 PM | #4 | Member Join Date: Nov 2007 Location: NH Posts: 79 | OK, aceyx really got me with that one Kudos. But sorry, I have no educated idea of what on the car might be causing the noise. | | | 01-31-2008, 08:32 PM | #5 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | how big is she? __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 02-03-2008, 12:38 AM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | hahahaha lol to every reply!!!! i wonder if your diff is just getting more stress from added weight. try putting equal to her weight in the back driver side seat and see if it does it still or see if its really only passenger side. __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 02-03-2008, 01:41 AM | #7 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | hmm, good idea. I'll give putting an equal weight in the rear seat while she's in the front passenger one. I'll let you guys know if the noise goes away at that point. | | | 02-03-2008, 04:35 AM | #8 | Senior Member Join Date: Sep 2007 Location: asdfasdf Posts: 10,002 | Quote: Originally Posted by zboot hmm, good idea. It has been cold here but it seems worse when really cold. I think I have a cv needing grease or a bearing issue. The car will be parked this week until I get cash for parts. It didn't alleviate the weight problem as we hoped. Instead, now, I hear the noise at ALL speeds. Not only is it at all speeds, but it's now also comes from the back as well as the passenger side! I'm thinking I may just go back to riding alone. . . | | | 02-05-2008, 06:00 PM | #11 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: Eugene Oregon Posts: 6,182 | gut your car and tell everyone you only have one seat!! lol it sounds like the added weight is causing more stress on your diff or maybe wheel bearings. __________________ -Josh Sold-1995 318ti, Club Sport, Hellrot Sold-1996 318ti, Active Model, Boston Green Current- 1995 318ti, sport model, schwartz | | | 02-05-2008, 06:22 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Ferndale, MD Posts: 462 | just go for weight reduction __________________ No trunk for the Junk | | | 02-05-2008, 10:55 PM | #13 | Senior Member Join Date: Aug 2004 Location: state college, pa Posts: 3,431 | Does the noise get worse turning one way or the other? What kind of differential do you have (open, limited-slip)? Is it worse on bumpy or smooth roads? I would start by checking the wheel bearings on the right side then inspecting the suspension components for wear (including rubber bushings, towers & mounts). After that, CV boots & joints themselves. And to clarify, this is just a noise with no accompanying vibration? __________________ I scream, you scream, we all scream for ZOMBIES. | | | 02-05-2008, 10:58 PM | #14 | Senior Member Join Date: Nov 2006 Location: Pittsburgh, PA Posts: 1,224 | I've got a limited slip diff. I've found on bumpy roads where tall passengers in the back seat typically smack their heads on the roof, the noise tends to die down. . . I'll be checking the suspension this weekend. . . | | | 02-05-2008, 11:12 PM | #15 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2007 Location: Ferndale, MD Posts: 462 | Rear Shock Mounts??? __________________ No trunk for the Junk | | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
