Default Central locking nightmare... help!

Recently bought 96 sport, it needs LOTS of work. Noticed when I bought the car the drivers and passenger door locks wouldn't actuate the central locking system when turned and the hatch lock is either jammed or the hatch was replaced, hence the indication of body work, but car came with keyless entry so was never an issue - until now.

Keyfob bit the dust, just stopped working, changed batteries; whatever, will not work. I know the actuators work because the keyless system activates them, why wouldn't they work with the key? is there some kind of switch attached to the tumbler that can be replaced? Also, driver side door lock doesn't seem to turn the same distance as the passenger side or other ones that I've owned in the past. Was thinking of changing locks and ignition but have read about issues with rolling security code.

Also, Drivers door cannot be locked or unlocked manually, and the door lock button can be locked with door open, which seems odd to me for a beemer.

Sounds like there may have been an aftermarket system in there at some point, and the installer hacked the wiring.

Remote is BMW, no reason to believe its not. Where would the plug in module be for this system? I've red threads about it being under the glove box, not sure. Also is there a relay that controls thelocking system that may be failing.

Not sure if this means anything as it might have just been an option (I didn't buy it new), but my '96 sport didn't have remote entry on it... I had to install a system myself.
