When I try to start the car the starter spins but does not engage. The previous owner said the car started fine before he stopped driving it. I installed a new battery and the car does start when pushed. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. | | | 04-02-2006, 01:12 AM | #2 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | fuel or spark issues? __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-02-2006, 01:16 AM | #3 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Golden, CO Posts: 283 | I dont believe so, when i push started it, it started right up. and it idles just fine. The problem i am haveing is when key starting it, the engine isn't turning over (just spinning). | | | 04-02-2006, 01:23 AM | #4 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Philly, PA Posts: 189 | I had a similar problem with my 98ti, at time it would not start, it would turn but not grab. It ended up being the starter solenoid so I ordered a starter for $175.00 @ Partstrain.com I installed it but it was not a good fit, made funny sound when starting. So I took the OEM starter and had it rebuilt for $75.00 and reinstalled it. I still have the new one somewhere in my basement. Hope you get your starting problem resolved with out paying to much $$$$. | | | 04-02-2006, 01:37 AM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Golden, CO Posts: 283 | Is there anyway that I can just replace the solenoid? and what is the best way to acess the starter? I have been looking and have no idea. To install the starter, very easy if you have access to a lift. I do so installing mine was as easy as changing the motor oil. Must remove oil dipstick to remove the starter from the bottom. The starter is bolted to the transmission, mine only had two bolt and I had to use a universal socket and two very long extensions, about two feet total. | | | 05-10-2006, 09:43 PM | #8 | Junior Member Join Date: May 2006 Posts: 4 | either take the starter off and try and lubed up the shaft to get it engageing again or replace it!!! | | | 05-11-2006, 01:42 PM | #9 | Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Cincinnati Posts: 890 | If you get it out of the car, replace it. Its not worth the time taking it out again. __________________ SOLD!!! 1999 332ti //M Sport Titanium Silver M3 S52 3.2 I-6 Engine, M3 Clutch w/ ti Getrag Trans, Z3 3.15 LSD medium case diff and half shafts, OEM Hatch Spoiler, Eurosport HP Underdrive Pulleys, FDM, 17" DS1 rims, M3 Front Struts & Springs, M3 Instrument Cluster, 3-spoke //M steering wheel with tri-color stitching, SSK, CCFL Angels in Depo projectors with 5k HIDs | | | 05-13-2006, 12:04 AM | #10 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2006 Location: Golden, CO Posts: 283 | thanks for the help i ended up ordering a new one and takeing off the intake manifold to pull it off.
