My friends always call me a conservative driver when I'm driving my BMW. I did all the maintenance stuff, but a part of me is a little scared to push it. BMW isn't the best at reliability. How many of you push your cars and is it okay to push it? I have no worries when I'm driving the Honda cause I'm not worried about fixing it. | | | 07-02-2012, 06:46 AM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Dec 2011 Location: SoCal Posts: 702 | Depends on the current condition of the car. If it has some stuff wrong with it and you push it, then it will break and cost more, but if you do some preventive maintenance ... well then, have some fun . I flog my car pretty hard, I frequent the road you see in my sigpic, but I also do the maintenance for the kind of driving I do (or I try to =S). Its the same with any car, the question is how quick will it wear at the rate you drive it at and how much it will cost to maintain it at the level that you drive it at. __________________ ***328ti Build thread. *** Even more important: SUPPORT 318ti.org! When asked for the third time by the same women when to shift gears.... "Shift it when the rev limiter kicks in its a BMW not a effen YUGO...." From what I've seen these cars need to be wound up regularly babying them carbons up the valves and clogs the cat... Age is as much an enemy as anything on a german car, they cant make rubber parts for anything... I've since sold Sparky, which I deeply regret, but I've still got Trixie. Both cars were very reliable - Trixie is going on 16 and Sparky was 23 when I sold him. The only issues I've had with both is stuff that normally wears out - brakes, suspension parts, etc. As long as you pay attention to your routine maintenance and don't cut corners, they will last just as well as any other brand. __________________ Trixie Alpine White 1996 BMW 318ti Sport | | | 07-02-2012, 01:51 PM | #5 | Senior Member Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: Tulsa, OK Posts: 252 | I push mine pretty hard and I drive it everyday. Posts: 131 | Let it warm up and then floor it, pull to the rev limiter if you want, I know I've heard on numerous occasions M42's like high rmp's, not sure about M44 but its probably the same, Besides all your power is above 3-3.5k rpm anyways, just go hard, if it blows, swap in a 6 __________________ -Alex 1995 Bmw 318ti - Cordoba rot | | | 07-07-2012, 04:23 PM | #13 | Member Join Date: Oct 2007 Location: US Posts: 46 | i agree with everyone one...enjoying the car is what its all about. Yes, the rubber parts wear, electronic bits go bad and keeping up with maintenance is key (and not that hard!) My dad had a 79' 320i with well beyond 500k (odometer eventually gave out but he kept driving it for 5 more years), it was slow and tired but didn't burn a drop of oil and would cruze the highway @ 60mph all day. Original motor, trans, diff... These cars/engines are made to last, not like throw away when they break cars (Kia's, old hyundai's and few american cars(but their stepping up their game)).
