My exterior m-tech side moulding on the drivers door has come loose and is protruding away from the door, jamming when the door is opened. The rubber dowel that holds it in place slips out of the hole in the door panel which is slightly dented and out of shape. I'm thinking of using silicone to try and stick it back in place. Good idea? | | | 04-12-2006, 12:36 PM | #2 | Senior Member Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Greenville, SC Posts: 9,356 | I just read somewhere about 3M moulding adhesive. It is a double stick tape. It was probably on here about mounting a rear spoiler. __________________ ...steven BMW CCA #146825 1996 BMW 328ti • 2003 MINI Cooper S • 2016 M235i www.bmwcca.org | | | 04-12-2006, 12:38 PM | #3 | aka Stabby Join Date: Nov 2004 Location: Mead, CO Posts: 5,336 | is it an expanding plastic rivet that holds it in? if so, is all of it there? perhaps one of slightly larger size would work? __________________ 1996 318ti, California package, 267k miles current mods: bilstein sports, bavauto springs, e30 m3 LCABs, solid metal ball joints, bavauto RSMs w/reinforcements, e30 3.73 LSD & halfshafts, supersprint cat-back exhaust, turner rear sway bar reinforcements, IE poly subframe & RTABs + camber/toe kits, powdercoated e36 32x front calipers, sport mirrors, H&R 28mmF/19mmR sway bars, x-brace, auto solutions SSK w/poly bushing upgrade, BMW CD43 head unit, DICE HD Radio w/iPod integration and "stealth" HD antenna, staggered style 68s, orange electronic TPMS, leather arm rest, JT Designs metal undertray acquired and awaiting install: heated seat kit, cali top switch relo, lumbar support kit, park distance control kit, heated washer nozzle kit, m-coupe rear subframe, trailing arms, differential, and halfshafts, m-coupe front/rear brakes with master cylinder, under hood light kit, mud flaps, rear sun blind, auto-dimming rear view mirror, tilt steering wheel retrofit, apexcone 5000K HIDs with 55W ballasts 2002 X5 4.4 Sport Package, 53.5k miles Current Mods: e46 m3 steering wheel | | | 04-12-2006, 12:50 PM | #4 | Moderator Join Date: Jun 2003 Location: Bouncing off the rev limiter in CT! Posts: 3,156 | I'd pull the trim and replace all the clips for it. Using tape and/or glue will just make a mess. I'm sure the clips are under $20.00 for the entire door. Also, you may want to get paint-less dent removal to see if they can do something with the 'out of shape' panel. This could just cause the same thing to happen again. (do this before replacing the strip- the mounting holes could be useful for them, and you don't want to pull the strip again, damaging the new clips) | | | 04-12-2006, 01:12 PM | #5 | Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Dublin Posts: 66 | Cheers guys. 1996 31ti , I've used double sided tape for the licence plates and it works very well J!m, I hear you man I guess its best to replace the rivet.. The one closest to the front of the car seem to be the problem. Theres actually two holes right beside each other. I'm now wondering if there should be two rivets at that end and one has broken and fallen off..? | | | 04-12-2006, 01:25 PM | #6 | Senior Member Join Date: Oct 2005 Location: Watford, herts, England Posts: 805 | i wondered that when i put mine on but i didnt have enough of the plastic clips so i just put them in as evenly as i could. __________________ '96 318ti in Montreal Blue :m-tec sideskirts,m-bootspoiler,clear corners & repeaters .m-tech side mouldings, Magnex Exhaust System, leather armrest, F-15 gear Knob, 18" Evo 2's. They're not very expensive and will give a better hold. 3M tape is another option, and would make it much more permanent. Either option should work and both are relatively inexpensive and easy to do. __________________ moku 1996 318ti Cali Top w/ Downing/Atlanta Supercharger 2003 M3 w/ CSL trunk, splitters, & diffuser | | | 04-12-2006, 06:10 PM | #12 | Senior Member Join Date: Apr 2005 Location: San Francisco Posts: 308 | Those suckers are BMW specific, not to mention Mtech specific. Don't find yourself waiting for a bag of unusable clips to show up. They are part # 51-13-2-251-394 and cost about 2x as much as base trim clips. I think there are 6 for the door. I just replaced a bunch of them, as some of my mouldings were sliding around too. When you remove the moulding, it should have at least one notch in the track where the clips press into the moulding; this is for the center or guide clip. The remaining clips you align in accordance with the holes in the door. Its this clip locked in place by the notch on the track that keeps the whole moulding from sliding about. Regarding the extra holes near the front, I believe the larger one has somehting to do with window adjustment.... __________________ '99 ti /Mtechnic, Schwartz II, Meyle Control Arms w/Full Metal Ball Joints, PowerFlex poly LCAB's, Pirelli P Zero/Nero 225/50/16, "the d-baffle"...... | | | 04-13-2006, 09:35 AM | #13 | Member Join Date: Feb 2006 Location: Dublin Posts: 66 | great info thanks! | | | | Currently Active Users Viewing This Thread: 1 (0 members and 1 guests) | | Posting Rules | You may not post new threads You may not post replies You may not post attachments You may not edit your posts HTML code is Off | | | |
